Giant Viruses Are Infecting Algae in a Floating Lake in the Arctic

Giant viruses have been discovered infecting microscopic algae in a rare lake in the Arctic Ocean, a new study finds. The Milne Fiord epishelf lake is a body of freshwater that sits on top of seawater less than 500 miles (800 kilometers) from the North Pole. Researchers studying the lake found that the freshwater had a richer and more diverse range of viruses than the salt water beneath it. They also found "giant" viruses — several times larger than typical viruses — affecting microscopic algae just below the boundary between fresh water and salt water.

A Warm Intrusion in the Arctic Causes Extreme Pollution Levels

During the MOSAiC research expedition, conducted in the Arctic pack ice between 2019 and 2020, EPFL scientists observed an atmospheric perturbation triggered by the intrusion of a highly polluted warm air-mass. A first study providing further insight into the phenomenon and its potential implications has just been published.

Droppings of Arctic Seabirds Enrich the Environment

When people think of the Arctic, most people think of an icy or rocky place with sparse vegetation, if any. But next to the natural tundra, which mostly consists of dwarf shrubs or patchy vegetation patterns, there are some vegetation hotspots under bird nesting areas concentrated in steep cliffs.

A Perspective on Moving Forward With Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management

This event is part of the NOAA Science Seminar Series. The presenter is Jon Hare, Science and Research Director of the NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center. The NOAA Fisheries mission explicitly includes Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management - “We provide vital services for the nation, all backed by sound science and an ecosystem-based approach to management.” Yet many express that we have not made significant progress in implementing an ecosystem-based approach. Mr. Hare will explore this issue and consider the role that scientific culture plays in how we frame the problem and how we frame solutions. Mr. Hare’s conclusion is that to implement ecosystem-based management, we need to take one step at a time - together.
