Hello Everyone,

As the events surrounding COVID-19 continue to evolve rapidly we remain fully dedicated to the safety, health, and well-being of the students, teachers and school staff. A safe school environment begins at every student's home, each day. We rely on families to help our schools stay safe. By keeping an eye on their child's health and by supporting the methods put in practice at schools to remain open and provide in-person instruction in the safest way possible.
Some ways to help keep schools safe is to remind your child about precautions to take at school. Such as, washing hands and sanitizing often, keeping a 6ft stance from other students, wear a face covering, do not share objects with other students: water bottles, electronic devices, pens and pencils, or books.

COVID-19 Update
Your health matters, which is why we strongly encourage our neighbors here in District 5 to get vaccinated, and continue following the COVID-19 guidelinesSince August 2, 2021 the County of Santa Clara issued a new universal Indoor Face Covering Order due to the recent increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, due primarily to the Delta variant. Recent evidence has indicated that the Delta variant is more transmissible than prior variants of the virus, may cause more severe illness, and that even fully vaccinated individuals can spread the virus to others. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the California Department of Public Health now both recommend that all persons-regardless of vaccination status-wear face coverings indoors.
Currently in the Santa Clara County there is a cumulative of 125,235 COVID-19 cases, and 1,711 deaths. The number of people ages 12 and older with the complete vaccination are 1,360,474. We encourage more people to get fully vaccinated as it remains the best and most effective tool in preventing COVID-19 and its harms; evidence shows that even against the Delta variant, fully vaccinated individuals have substantial protection against severe illness, hospitalization and death.
If you or a loved one has tested positive for COVID-19 and need assistance quarantining, isolating, or with other resources, contact: 408-808-7770
Hotline is available 7 days/week, 8 am - 6:00 pm.
The County and VTA have launched a free, door-to-door service to transport patients to their vaccine appointments. Accessible VTA paratransit vehicles will pick patients up, take them to their appointment, wait for them, and then provide the return trip. Anyone for whom transportation is a barrier to getting vaccinated can utilize this service, 7 days per week. Call the COVID-19 Assistance Navigation resource hotline at 408-809-2124 at least 48 hours prior to your vaccine appointment to request this no cost service.

Close the Reid-Hillview Airport
On Friday August 13 my staff and I held a press conference regarding the closing of the Reid-Hillview Airport. This is an extremely important issue as residents of neighborhoods adjacent to the airport have been, and continue to be exposed to airborne lead emissions that have detrimental effects to their health. My colleagues' Councilmembers, Esparza, Peralez, Medical Expert Dolores Alvarado, Hillview Resident Brisa Rojas, and Mothers Out Front Susan Butler-Graham and the Honorable Peter Ortiz from SCCOE joined voices at the Close the Reid-Hillview Airport Press Conference. We requested the County Board of Supervisors for the closure of the Reid-Hillview Airport to prevent lead contamination from their operations. This is in response to the Study Commissioned by the County of Santa Clara, which found increased blood levels in children living near the airport.
The study was reviewed by the County Board of Supervisors. It was unanimously approved to begin the process to close Reid-Hillview Airport by prohibiting the sale or use of leaded fuel and pursuing all available paths to early airport closure prior to 2031. Thank you to everyone who called in and gave public comments. This victory was made possible because of you all!
National Night Out
I am happy to announce that this year my office hosted National Night Out in a joint effort with Viva Parks at Emma Prusch Park in East San José for all our residents on August 3, 2021. We had an awesome turn out and met so many awesome community members here in our beautiful East Side!
Our National Night Out brought over 1000 attendees! We all enjoyed some great food, games, and live music! We also raffled off prizes for families who attended! There was over 60 organizations in our resource fair who shared helpful information to the community.
Our community members wore masks and some also got vaccinated with the van on site for their first COVID-19 shot! I want to thank all our sponsors once again for making National Night Out a success! We are very grateful for their generosity in helping our East Side community come together again after such a long time!

Celebration of Life
On August 4th my staff joined the family of Keyla Salazar to celebrate what would have been her 16th birthday. Keyla was a beautiful, intelligent, young lady who's life was tragically taken from us during the Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting two years ago. She loved animals, was a budding young artist, and showed a lot of care for those around her. Keyla is San José; we are all Keyla. A beautiful soul lost to soon to senseless gun violence.
We love you, Keyla. Happy Birthday! May you rest in peace.
