Congratulations to the Summer 2022 Pilot Project Program (PPP)

The UMass Center for Clinical & Translational Science (UMCCTS) recently announced the 2022 Pilot Projects Program (PPP) awardees. Department of Medicine awardees include:


Prabhani Atukorale, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Program in Innate Immunity, Co-PI, for Developing a Targeted mRNA-Encapsulated Lipid Nanoparticle for Restoring Ciliogenesis & Treatment of Polycystic Kidney Disease.


Alok Kapoor, MD, Associate Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine, PI, for Storytelling to Reduce Gap in Anticoagulation Use in African Americans with Atrial Fibrillation.


Shyam Patel, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology, PI, and Jonathan Gerber, MD, Professor and Chief in the Division of Hematology and Oncology, Co-PI/Mentor, for Clinical Translation of an Innovative Leukemia Stem Cell Assay for Detection, Prognostication, and Precision Management of Blood Cancers.


Apurv Soni, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor and Director in the Program in Digital Medicine, PI, for Healthy at Home: Feasibility Trial of Home-Based Management of Patients with COPD Using Digital Technology. 


Mary Dawn Co, MD, Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Immunology, part of the team led by Lawrence Stern, PhD, for Cross-Reactive T Cell Epitopes for Development of Pan-Coronavirus Subunit Vaccines.


The goal of the PPP program is to accelerate the translation of basic discoveries into practical, cost-effective solutions that improve human health. This competitive award grants PPP project teams up to $50,000 for 1 year to accelerate the translation of innovative discoveries.

Katherine Cooper has Abstract Accepted for United European Gastroenterology UEG Week


Congratulations to Katherine Cooper, MD, Resident Physician in the Division of Gastroenterology, whose abstract Malnutrition in Patients with Chronic Liver Disease Undergoing Inpatient Liver Transplant Evaluation, was chosen to be presented at this year's United European Gastroenterology UEG Week.

Transitions ACR Offers Resources to Mental Health Professionals 


The UMass Chan Diversity & Inclusion Office recently shared resources through Transitions to Adulthood Center for Research (Transitions ACR), to help mental health professionals provide culturally competent care for LGBTQIA+ youth and young adults.


Resources include:

Introduction to LGBTQIA+ Population; Statistics on the Adverse Life Events Experienced by LGBTQIA+ Youth; Mental Health & LGBTQIA+ Individuals; and Five Tips for Mental Health Providers to Provide Culturally Competent Care for LGBTQIA+ Youth & Young Adults

UMass Memorial Medical Center's atrial fibrillation (Afib) team has been nationally recognized by the American Heart Association for its commitment to treating patients according to the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines. Caregivers received the Get with the Guidelines-Afib Gold Quality Achievement Award.

Faculty Search: Longitudinal Preceptor in Medicine


The Third Year Clerkship in Medicine is seeking faculty for a Longitudinal Preceptor in Medicine. Descriptions of the position can be found below. If you have interest in a position or wish to nominate a colleague for consideration for the position, please submit a CV and a brief statement of interest to Ms. Sara Jacques. Please direct any specific questions about the role to Dr. Nancy Skehan.

 

The Longitudinal Preceptor in Medicine (LPM) is a faculty member who serves as mentor to a small cohort of students during their clerkship rotation. They are asked to do the following:

  • Conduct at least ten 2-hour meetings per 15-week Care of Adult block with assigned LPM group, reviewing on-line modules, EKG interpretation, and case presentations
  • Conduct a mid-clerkship review of each student’s performance
  • Review student written histories and physicals and give timely feedback to students
  • Conduct Physical Diagnosis rounds with students at least 3 of their 4 weeks on the inpatient service
  • Precept OSCE
  • Prepare grades for each student in assigned LPM group and attend Grading Committee meetings
  • Provide academic support and mentoring to struggling students within the group
