DREAM TEAM ON THE WEB

The congregation has been at work since last August talking and listening and dreaming about who we want to be as a church going forward. From that process, we have gathered stories, ideas, and insights. All of that has now been gathered in one place on this FBC webpage for you to read and ponder. We hope you will take the opportunity to review it before our next congregational effort, which will take place
on Sunday, March 27, before worship.
SOUPER BOWL 2022
While the Bengals and the Rams give it their all on the gridiron on February 13, won’t you join us in giving our best efforts in our own SOUPER BOWL SUNDAY? We invite you to bring in cans of soup as you come to Sunday School and worship that day. There will be collection sites in the Lewis Lobby by the Welcome Desk and also in the Narthex at the front doors of the church. Simply place your cans of soup in the labeled bins, and we will donate them to Urban Ministries' food pantry which provides fresh produce and canned goods for families in need throughout our community. The collection bin in the Lewis Lobby will be out the Wednesday before Souper Bowl Sunday in case you want to make two trips!  GO TEAM FBC!

HONDURAS 2022

For nearly twenty years, FBC has been sending mission teams to Honduras as part of Baptists on Missions Honduran ministry. After a year hiatus, FBC looks to continue its rich tradition of serving in southern Honduras. This year's trip is approaching quickly and is scheduled for March 14–21. The cost is $500 per person -- which covers food, lodging and ground transportation -- plus airfare. Our project is house construction. Picture a large pile of sand, bags of cement, two metal windows and two metal doors, tin roofing sheets, and 800 concrete blocks. Then imagine five days later presenting keys to a family so they now have a place to call home. If you are interested in going, or have an interest in future mission trips to Honduras, please contact Steve Brown at 919-349-4984 or John Baldwin at 919-600-9124.

CENTERPOINT (IN-PERSON AND ZOOM)

On February 9, we continue our program extending support to our Jewish friends in response to the recent attack on a synagogue in Texas. This week, we will view and discuss a powerful presentation Imam Abdullah Antepli from Duke University gave to Beth Meyer Synagogue and Beth El Synagogue in Durham on January 22. Then on February 16, the final week, we will ponder appropriate Christian responses in more detail.

Join us for a live broadcast of the Centerpoint adult program, every Wednesday night via Zoom with this link! To view the speaker throughout the presentation, click the three dots on the right portion of the screen and choose "pin this video." If you would prefer to call in, use 646-558-8656 , Meeting ID: 842 9426 6630 Passcode: 478112

WEDNESDAY NIGHT SUPPER

Each week, dinner will continue to be from 5-6pm, tailgating style, in the parking lot. If it rains or is too cold, your family may come inside the building and we'll all spread out between the Fellowship Hall, Lewis lobby, and 301/302. We have returned to requiring reservations for Wednesday night dinners; reserve your spot at this link to the page on the church website or by calling the church office.

The menus for Wednesday night suppers are as follows:
February 9: Pork chops, apple sauce, and macaroni and cheese
February 16: Broccoli cheddar soup with chicken salad sandwich
February 23: Meatball Night! (served with rice)
March 2: Penne primavera with dinner rolls
WE ARE PROUD TO PRESENT . . .

Matthew Hager, part of our church family, is a featured actor in the next play from Justice Theater Project: We Are Proud to Present . . . The play fits into our Centerpoint emphasis on racial justice, acts of genocide, and our response.

In the play, a group of actors gathers to tell the little-known story of the first genocide of the twentieth century. As the full force of a horrific past crashes into the good intentions of the present, what seemed a far-away place and time is suddenly all too close to home. Just whose story are they telling?

Award-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury collides the political with the personal in a play that is irreverently funny and seriously brave.
The play is live at St. Augustine's University and live-streamed, February 18 - February 27. The themes of the play may not be suitable for early teens and younger children. Parental discretion is encouraged.

Further information and tickets are available HERE.
CHURCHWIDE RETREAT IN APRIL IS BACK!

Though we’ve had to miss our churchwide retreat the last two years, we’re hopeful that THIS IS OUR YEAR to return to the fun and togetherness of this time away. Mark your calendars now for April 22-24 at Fort Caswell!

As in years past, we’ll enjoy small groups, worship, individual prayer time, free time, meals together, and a myriad of craft and recreation electives from which to choose!  We have reserved Redwine, Yaupon, Yucca, and Riverside Cottages as well as ten rooms in the Smith Conference Center (which has ramp access as well as elevators inside). We have made reservations for up to 130 people; sleeping arrangements in the houses range from single-gender bunk rooms to private rooms with double beds to a few rooms with a double bed and bunk; sleeping arrangements in the Smith Conference Center are rooms with two double beds and cost a bit more. It will be communal living, but that’s part of the fun of getting to know each another! Youth and third through fifth graders can attend without their parents as long as we have individuals who are dedicated to help chaperone during free times and transitions.

The cost of the weekend (two nights lodging + four meals + supplies) will be:
  • Housing in one of the cottages: $80/person with a family cap of $350;
  • Double occupancy in the Smith Conference Center: $86/person (max of four per room);
  • Single occupancy in the Smith Conference Center: $120/person;
  • For those wishing to stay off-campus: $25/person to cover visitor fee plus food/supplies.

Our time together will begin after supper on Friday and will end after worship on Sunday morning. There is no charge for children two and under.

Space is limited, so please contact Lynn Lingafelt and make your payment no later than February 13 to reserve your spot and indicate your sleeping preferences. Private bedrooms will be assigned on a first-come/first-served basis. We will operate under the most current CDC and NC COVID guidelines. With current realities, we would require vaccination or a negative COVID for all participants, but we will finalize these plans closer to the retreat.

When you register with Lynn, she’ll confirm your total amount owed, which can be paid via check to FBC (put "Churchwide Retreat" in the memo line), by following this PayPal link, or by following this Give+ link

Since we know that not everyone will be able to attend, we will also have Sunday School and worship in our sanctuary on Sunday morning, April 24.
SANCTUARY CHOIR UPDATE

As we work through the current Omicron wave of the pandemic, the format of the Sanctuary Choir will remain as smaller ensembles for a few weeks in both Wednesday evening rehearsals and Sunday morning worship services. We anticipate resuming normal activities soon. Interested in joining the choir? Have questions? Contact Warren Howell. Vaccination against COVID-19 is a requirement.

Dear friends,
Mary Carol and I thank you for your continuing stream of expressions of care and love. From the beginning of my prostate cancer diagnosis to today your support has been so heartening. Thus I want you to know we are ecstatic about my body's response thus far to my medications and hormone therapies. Most days I go about life as vigorously as most other men my age. For this we give thanks to God, to medical science, and to the prayers of saints like you. You are precious to us, and we thank you so very much!
