APPLE - SEPTEMBER RUBY

An excellent zone 2 apple with medium sized fruit. Stores well!

Over the last few years, there is a trend towards planting and harvesting our own fruit. Perhaps it reminds you of picking saskatoons while you were a youngster. Or maybe the price of groceries is making you look at alternative options.

Whatever motivates you to plant and nurture fruit trees or shrubs, make sure you dive in with the best information and resources for prairie gardens and orchards.

We know that growing fruit on the prairies can be a challenging task.

Unfortunately, the fluctuations in our climate are deadly to plants and trees that aren’t meant to thrive in these conditions. Perhaps you have experienced this with the purchase of the “big box” fruit trees?

You can easily increase your success rate by choosing nursery stock that is developed to survive in our prairie ecosystem.

At D&A Gardens we have years of experience growing and harvesting prairie fruit. Did you know that we were the first commercial growers of saskatoons in the world?

We have taken those years of knowledge and turned it into the development and selection of fruit stock that will thrive and produce fruit in our climate.

Therefore, our nursery contains a unique variety of hardy prairie fruit stock. Apples, cherries, and plums are among some of the hardiest varieties available.

You may be surprised what you can grow in your prairie garden. Take some time and browse through our online catalogue to see the variety that is available.

If you still have questions, pick up the phone and we will be happy to answer them for you.

The Prairie's Super Fruit!

alfred Apricot.jpg

Saskatoons are our prairie's super fruit. Full of that unique saskatoon flavor, they pack a mighty antioxidant punch!

Saskatoons and the Canadian prairies go hand-in-hand. These hardy fruit trees have withstood the test of time and climate changes. They thrive along the coulees, river valleys and road sides throughout the Prairies.

Locals look forward to the plentiful white blossoms in the spring, hoping they don't get frost on them. Then in mid July, the dark purple berries can be seen hanging in bunches, begging to to picked.

Indigenous cultures used the saskatoon berries for food, drying them to be used during the winter. They are known to have high sources of antioxidants which have anti-cancer, anti-aging and heart healthy benefits. No wonder indigenous cultures used saskatoons for medicinal purposes as well.

Besides fresh eating, saskatoons can be used in canning, baking, preserves, and maybe our favorite use - for making wine. They freeze well and make excellent additions to muffins, pancakes and bumbleberry desserts!

At D&A Gardens we grow 19 varieties of saskatoons. We do that so you don't have too! In mid July U-Pick saskatoons will be available.

If you are looking for saskatoon trees for your garden, give us a call and we can help you choose the best variety.

Saskatoons make an excellent wine. Each berry is packed full of flavor that gives the wine it's full taste and color.

Our saskatoon wine uses beautiful dark purple saskatoon berries to create a delightful blend that tastes like prairie sunshine!
