Saskatoons and the Canadian prairies go hand-in-hand. These hardy fruit trees have withstood the test of time and climate changes. They thrive along the coulees, river valleys and road sides throughout the Prairies.
Locals look forward to the plentiful white blossoms in the spring, hoping they don't get frost on them. Then in mid July, the dark purple berries can be seen hanging in bunches, begging to to picked.
Indigenous cultures used the saskatoon berries for food, drying them to be used during the winter. They are known to have high sources of antioxidants which have anti-cancer, anti-aging and heart healthy benefits. No wonder indigenous cultures used saskatoons for medicinal purposes as well.
Besides fresh eating, saskatoons can be used in canning, baking, preserves, and maybe our favorite use - for making wine. They freeze well and make excellent additions to muffins, pancakes and bumbleberry desserts!
At D&A Gardens we grow 19 varieties of saskatoons. We do that so you don't have too! In mid July U-Pick saskatoons will be available.
