STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK

Our Staff Appreciation Week this year is scheduled for May 1-5. As parents of our school community, you are encouraged to express your appreciation to our staff and teachers in tangible ways that demonstrate your thanks for the ways they teach and care for your children.

STUDENTS AND PARENTS

We are in the process of finalizing procedures for collecting end-of-year materials. Please start organizing so that you are ready. Make sure that you have:

  • Chromebook (with charger and case)
  • Textbooks
  • Library books
  • Music and/or sports uniforms
  • Instruments
  • PE locks
  • Any other school materials

A NOTE REGARDING PARKING STICKERS

Remember to save your parking sticker. You will be able to renew it for the 2023-2024 school year. If you do not have one to renew in the fall, you will be charged the $5 cost of a new sticker. You may not use a sibling's or graduate's sticker.

SERVICE HOURS

REMINDERS:

  • All service hours earned between January 1 and May 31 need to be submitted by June 1.
  • Remember, all students are required to submit 35 service hours by January of their senior year.

Summer is also a great time to serve, so students may want to consider making some plans right now for how they can serve in West Michigan and around the world in the next few months. Service hours earned during the summer need to be submitted by September 1.

Our students should earn service hours by looking for ways to impact others and seeking out ways to positively impact the greater Grand Rapids community. These are not intended to be hours where our kids help out their grandparents and family members; that’s part of being in a family. CCHS service hours should be earned through impacting others to whom we aren’t related.

Students can find forms to submit hours in the CCHS office or by clicking on the Service Hours Verification Form button below.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact Mr. Henderson or Mr. Timmer.

ATTENTION JUNIOR PARENTS!

Can you believe next year is your student's last year at Calvin? Each year, the parents of the Senior class throw an all-night celebration after graduation. To pull this off, we need parent volunteers. We are forming the committee now since planning starts early in the fall. Would you consider serving on the Senior All-Nighter Committee? This would include planning, fundraising, and attending the last hurrah for them as a class.

If you would like more information, contact Tracy Cinco at 616-450-3202 or via email.

ATTENTION ALL FUTURE 9TH GRADERS, ATHLETES,

SEVERE WEATHER INFORMATION

Tornado Closing: When notified in advance of a tornado WATCH or WARNING, these emergency procedures will be followed:

  1. When a WARNING is issued, students will not leave the building but will be taken by their teacher to the safest area in the building.
  2. In the event of a WARNING, students may be detained after the usual dismissal time.
  3. In the event of a WATCH at normal dismissal time, students will be dismissed as usual.
  4. Parents may pick up their own children at any time.

The various public schools with whom we are related for busing purposes all have a similar tornado policy. In the event of a tornado WATCH situation, busing will be done as it is on a regular school day.

Tornado Policy for Coaches and the Athletic Director:

A. All practices and events scheduled after school (anything scheduled 4:00 p.m. or earlier) will be canceled.

B. Events scheduled later in the evening (e.g. 6:30 p.m. soccer)

will be canceled if the “all clear” is not given at least two hours

prior to the starting time of the event.

2. If a Watch occurs after school has been dismissed:

A. All practices and contests in progress will be immediately

suspended and the athletes sent home.

B. Events scheduled later in the evening, see “1B” above.

 3. If a Warning occurs after school has been dismissed:

A. All practices and contests in progress will be immediately

suspended and the athletes will report to the locker rooms.

If there is an immediate threat, athletes outside should use the

the ravine that runs past the tennis courts.

B. Events scheduled later in the evening, see “1B” above.

SCHEDULE CHANGES FOR 2023-24

Please make every attempt to request desired schedule changes prior to the end of this school year on June 2. The next chance to make a change after June 2 will be in August, but options may be more limited at that time. Once school begins, students may only change into a new class during the first week of a semester. After the first week, new classes may be added only if they get approved for an exception for classes that still have space available.

If you have any desired schedule changes, you should email our counselors.

Miss Karel for incoming 9th-grade students

Mr. Vander Wal for incoming 10th-12th grade students

A full schedule can be found by clicking on the AP Exam Schedule button below the Notes from the Counseling Office section.

COLLEGE ENTRANCE TESTING

While some colleges are continuing with test-optional admission that started due to COVID test cancellations, many are getting back to requiring a score for admission and/or merit scholarships. In general, it is our recommendation that college-bound students attempt both the SAT and ACT and that they take 3-4 tests in combination (SAT, ACT, CLT – Classic Learning Test, accepted by more and more colleges). More information can be found by clicking on the ACT, SAT, and CLC Information buttons below the Notes from the Counseling Office section

KHAN ACADEMY

The Khan Academy offers free, personalized practice for students preparing for the SAT, but it is also beneficial for the ACT. The counselors have helped students link Khan Academy and College Board accounts to allow for tailored practice based on PSAT and/or SAT scores. We encourage college-bound students to use their Khan Academy accounts to prepare and improve test scores. College Board research has shown an average score increase of 60 points for 6 hours of Khan SAT practice and an average increase of 85 points for 20 hours of practice. These kinds of score increases often result in thousands of dollars more for merit scholarships. Summer is a great time to log these practice hours by clicking on the Khan Academy button below the Notes from the Counseling Office section.

SAT AND PSAT 10 SCORES

SAT and PSAT 10 scores are now available in students’ College Board accounts. The juniors had the opportunity to choose four institutions to receive free score sends for their SAT scores. Additional score sends can be completed through the College Board website for a fee.

CCHS SCHOLARSHIPS

CCHS scholarship recipients will be receiving information for transferring funds to their college accounts at the end of the school year.

HONORS CONVOCATION

  • The seniors recently received a Senior Survey in a Google Form asking about future plans and scholarships/awards received.
  • Students who did not respond to the survey yet should contact Mr. Vander Wal ASAP.
  • In addition, students need to provide documentation of scholarships and awards to Mr. Vander Wal to be recognized for them at our Honors Convocation on Tuesday, May 9.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES

Summer is a great time to continue career exploration. Students are encouraged to log into their Xello accounts to explore various career and college options, build a resume, complete career and personality assessments, set goals, etc. Students are also encouraged to set up job shadows over the summer months. Some of the best learning happens outside of the normal school day and experiencing multiple job shadows can help students as they search for their calling and vocation.

CCES SCHOLARSHIP

ATHLETIC PASSES FOR 2023-2024:

We are currently evaluating passes for next year. The OK Conference is studying the price of admission to OK games. We will have more information later this spring or early summer.

ATTENTION PARENTS OF ALL CCHS ATHLETES

It is a privilege to participate in athletics at Calvin Christian High School. It is essential that not only players but also parents participate to ensure the viability and integrity of our sports programs.

The Athletic Department requires all parents to choose two concession/ticket slots per athlete per season. Concessions are a critical fundraiser that provides funds for uniforms, equipment, and field maintenance for all of our student-athletes.

The Boosters will email parents instructions for signing up. You will be required to choose two slots by a certain date or slots will be assigned for you if you do not choose any. You are responsible for finding your own replacement if you cannot participate. You may be asked to fill slots in a subsequent season pending slot availability of the current season.

Thank you for supporting your athlete and CCHS Athletics. If you have any questions, please contact our Athletic Director, Tom Bouma, at 616-257-4219 or by clicking on the button below.
