News and Stories
In this story for Connections, the online magazine of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, a medical student reflects on her experiences as a beneficiary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which has been supported by Georgetown since its 2012 inception.
During a panel at the Ruesch symposium called "Facts and Fiction Around Clinical Trials," Jan Baird-Adams, a librarian from Maryland, spoke about her experience being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and participating in a clinical trial. This month, Baird-Adams will celebrate one year since being declared cancer-free.
In a study using a first-of-its-kind mouse model of aging that mimics breast cancer development in estrogen receptor-positive postmenopausal women, investigators at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and colleagues have determined that over-expression, or switching on of the Esr1 gene could lead to elevated risk of developing estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer in older women.
While it has long been recognized that drugs that block the cancer-promoting activity of estrogen reduce the risk of developing new breast cancers, a new computer modeling study led by researchers at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and colleagues showed that these treatments could also reduce the risk of dying from the disease in women who are at high risk.
Announcements
Free, on-demand COVID-19 saliva-based PCR testing is now available via vending machines located at the medical center as well as the main campus, law center and School of Continuing Studies. Saliva-based PCR testing provides the same accuracy as nasal swabs, and this new system will provide our community with greater flexibility regarding testing and enable our existing campus testing sites to become available for other events and activities.
