On September 7, Metropolitan Borys met with the community of the Transfiguration Parish of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Lozova, Kharkiv region. He spoke with parishioners and volunteers, as well as with local journalists and the leadership of the local administration.

He also climbed to the roof of the church, where, despite the proximity of combat and the constant shelling of the city, the construction of small domes continues. These domes were destroyed by Soviet authorities, who had converted the church into a cinema.

Fr. Methodius Kushko, C.Ss.R. reposed in the Lord on the morning of Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Home in Saskatoon, SK at the age of 92 (in the 54th year of his priesthood and the 58th of his profession of vows). He is predeceased by his parents Matheas and Anna (Zubyk) Kushko, his sister Eugenia Sereda, his brother Bill Kushko and sister Stephanie in infancy. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Fr. Methodius was born in Edmore, SK, on June 16, 1932. After high school, he attended the Saskatchewan Teacher’s College and taught for 11 years. He was principal at Buffalo Narrows, Margo and Hazlet and assistant superintendent in the Borderland School Unit. Hearing God’s call, he joined The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (The Redemptorists) making his first profession of vows on August 28, 1966. He completed theological studies in Ottawa and was ordained to the priesthood on July 5, 1970 in Yorkton by Bishop Andrew Roborecki.
Fr. Methodius’ first assignment was to teach at St. Vladimir’s College, Roblin, MB. where he became principal in 1972 and pastor of the Roblin parish area in 1974. He served in a variety of Ukrainian Catholic Parishes: as pastor of Sacred Heart in Ituna, SK (1978-81); Preeceville, SK (1981-82); assistant pastor of St. John the Baptist, Newark, N.J.(1982-84); pastor of Immaculate Conception, Hillside, N.J. (1984-86); pastor of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Moose Jaw, SK. (1987-93). In 1992, he completed a B.A. honors degree in psychology from the University of Regina. He returned to St. Vlad’s to teach again in 1993. He was assigned to Sacred Heart Parish in Ituna, SK. 1996-2002.
At the age of 70 in 2002, Fr. Methodius went to St. Mary’s Monastery in Yorkton, SK. to “semi-retire.” He became involved with CJGX Radio and then hosted the Ukrainian Hour for many years on The Rock FM and Access TV Channel 7.
Throughout his long, dedicated and colorful ministry, Fr. Methodius was active in church organizations as chaplain for the UCWL and the Knights of Columbus. He taught the Ukrainian language and promoted the Ukrainian culture for which he was recognized in 2013 by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress of Saskatchewan as a recipient of the Nation Builders Award.
In 2019, Fr. Methodius moved to St. Vladimir’s Villa in Saskatoon to fully retire. With declining health, he went to Trinity Manor and then to St. Joseph’s Home.
May God grant His ever to be remembered servant Fr. Methodius eternal rest! Вічная память!

“Whoever wishes to come after Me must deny himself. Take up his cross, and follow Me.” (Mark 8:34)
In the Gospel reading for the Sunday after the Exaltation of the holy, precious, and life-giving Cross of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, we are told that there are conditions to discipleship. If one wishes to be a disciple of Christ, a true follower, a true believing Christian, one “must deny his or her very self. To do this, one needs “humility.” The Christian attests, confesses, that there is but one God, the Blessed Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. There is one God in three Divine Persons. God is the Creator; we are His creatures made in His image and likeness.
The Lord God instructed us often by parables about the mystery of the Kingdom of God. Jesus in His earthly ministry showed the Apostle and the crowds and us today how to live according to the Holy Will of His Heavenly Father. The Totally Innocent One, the All-Good Lord in Whom there is no wrong, taught and led us, not only in words, but also in action.
Here the Lord tells us: “follow Me”, elsewhere He says: “Go and do likewise.” After telling the parable of the Good Samaritan”, the Lord wants us to do as the Good Samaritan had done and not like the other two who had seen the man beaten, robbed, and left half-dead. The two others who had “happened to be going down that road, but when they saw him (the victim who was robbed, beaten and left half-dead), they passed by on the opposite side.” (Luke 10:31-32) It was a foreigner, a non-Jew, a Samaritan who had compassion for his neighbor in need and did the good deed, showed compassion. This the Lord wants you and me to do likewise.
Our professor of American history at Saint Basil’s College in Stamford, Connecticut, also offered a course in public speaking. Since we seminarians were preparing to one day, Lord willing, be ordained as priests, our first assignment was to prepare a sermon, homily, reflection, on the cost or price of discipleship. The professor, who himself was a priest, was quite emphatic that Christian discipleship, if it is real, genuine, is not free of pain nor of sacrifice. There is a “cost” or “price” to being a true disciple of Christ. Just as Christ walked the way of the Cross, so too we are to take up our cross daily and follow Christ, walk in His footsteps.
The true disciple of Christ is willing to suffer and if need be, even die for the Faith. Many a Christian in the early Church were persecuted for the Faith, for their belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. They understood the price of “authenticity” and that they may suffer for remaining faithful to Christ and His Gospel message of Absolute Love and Truth. There are many men and women throughout the ages and in different geographic locations who have been have been canonized as “saints”. But there are many more who are yet “uncanonized” but known to the Lord God.
In the Gospel of St. John 15:18-19, Jesus explains: “If the world hates you, realize that it hated Me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you.”
Our love must be first and foremost a love for God above all else – anyone else and everything else. Our priorities are to be in place. God is to have the first place in our everyday lives. The Christian disciple does all for the greater glory of God and salvation of souls.
Our love is to be self-giving and even self-sacrificial, just as the love of Christ was when He endured the passion and humiliation of the Cross. However, in so doing this Christ redeemed the world from sin once and for all. Christ conquered death by His death and opened wide access to the Heavenly Kingdom.
As we sojourn on earth may we understand this earthly life to be a pilgrimage to the Heavenly City of which St. Augustine wrote. May we constantly place ourselves under the protection of the Mother of God, the most perfect disciple of the Lord God, Her Son. And seeking to follow the Lord daily, we pray to be deemed worthy one day of eternal life and happiness in Heaven.

“Community Flea Market/Craft Fair Slavic Food Festival” – Saturday, September 21st
Now is a good time to begin planning to get that “extra stuff” out of your living area. To help you, everyone is invited to Holy Myrrh-Bearers Church, 900 Fairview Road, in Swarthmore (Ridley Township) to a community-wide Outdoor Flea Market/Craft Fair Slavic Food Festival on Saturday September 21st from 9:00 am. thru 3:00 pm. with a rain date of Saturday, September 28th. If you or your family have non-food items to sell or if you are a non-food vendor, spaces are now being offered for only $25.00. Spaces will be approximately 10' x 16' (1 and 1/2 car spaces) and you may set up your tables beginning at 7:30 to 8:00 am. Vehicles may be parked next door at Notre Dame's parking lot. A check for $25.00 per space is requested by September 15th to secure your non-food vendor space. Checks may be made payable and sent to or dropped off at:
