ABA Hybrid Annual Meeting
The Undiagnosed Long-Term Impact of Judicial Review on Emergency Public Health Orders
Join Justice David K. Thomson and Chief of Staff and former General Counsel, Office of the Governor, Matt Garcia, among other presenters for a session as part of the ABA’s Hybrid Annual Meeting at 1 p.m. CDT on Aug. 6. The judiciary’s role in reviewing the scope of state authority to design emergency response measures to an emerging and ongoing crisis is the subject of this program. The program begins with a mock argument.
A state solicitor will present first (former General Counsel and current Chief of State to the Office of the Governor), followed by a civil liberties advocate (former Deputy Assistant Attorney General and current professor of Heath and Biomedical Law). The mock argument and questions posed by the court will highlight issues common to COVID-19 litigation. A panel of three judges (Georgia and New Mexico Supreme Court Justices and a Professor in Public Health Law from Boston University) will then hold a mock conference to discuss these issues. Visit americanbar.org to register.

Notice of E-Filing in Magistrate Court Civil Cases
Attorneys may now file civil cases electronically in all magistrate courts across New Mexico. A phased-in statewide implementation of e-filing in magistrate courts was completed when the service began July 26 in the Fourth, Seventh and Eighth Judicial Districts. E-filing and service of documents will occur through the online File & Serve system which also will be used to submit proposed text/orders for judges to review.
E-filing is currently voluntary but will become mandatory for attorneys filing civil cases in magistrate courts effective Sept. 9. Visit the Judiciary’s e-filing webpage for more information.
