THIS SUNDAY'S
WORSHIP SERVICE
"Which Story of Christmas
Works for You (If Any)?"

Rev. Sue Browning, Minister

Lynn Dollinger, Service Leader

Michael Casey & Dick Durham, Musicians

In Person and Zoom

Sunday, December 4, 2022

The meaning of any holiday is crowd-sourced. Holidays take on new meaning each time they are celebrated. Is there some aspect of Christmas and the whole holiday season that is striking you as particularly meaningful this year? Are there winter holidays other than Christmas that touch your heart, or meet your need for celebration or quiet? At this service with Rev. Sue Browning we'll reflect on the many ways we shape the meaning of the holiday season again and again.

So we can begin the service promptly at 10 am, please arrive at the church, or sign into Zoom (click here) by no later than 9:50 am.

All of this week's worship service collection (December 4) will go to, and kick off, the UUCR "Holiday Sharing" program for this year.

REMINDER: There will be an informational meeting after the service regarding the Woodlands Memorial Garden Accessibility Project. Everyone who is interested should plan to attend.

Welcoming Families and Children on Sunday Mornings
Each Sunday, UUCR offers childcare and simple age-appropriate activities for children of all ages. If you have any questions about UUCR's programming for families and children, please be in touch with Rev. Sue.

"Working Together for Social Justice: the Intersectional Imperative"

Author, teacher, and activist Luisah Teish has said, "Our fates are tied. We have this strange notion on this planet that our fates are not tied. If it were not so we would not be here together. It’s that simple.” It’s a reality that can’t be denied, so why do people seem to insist on defining ourselves through division and polarization? More importantly, how do we work through this human impulse, and move toward greater social justice?

"Wonder, Awe, and the Darkest of Nights"

What do you most pay attention to when it is really dark out? The stars, the quiet, the sounds? Have you recently been in awe of pictures coming back from the new Webb telescope? At this service with Rev. Sue Browning we'll gather and consider this quote from Albert Einstein: "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle." As a part of this service we will light the menorah in celebration of Hanukkah. If you would like to assist with the lighting of the menorah, please contact Rev. Sue in advance of the service.

"Holiday Sharing" Program
Begins December 4
All of this week's worship service collection (December 4) will go to, and kick off, the UUCR "Holiday Sharing" program for this year. For the past several years our UUCR Social Justice Committee has organized a personalized, holiday gift collection for a local family in need as sponsored by our Kent County Department of Social Services along with gift cards for DSS families in Queen Anne's County. We have been matched with a family of six, which includes a father and five children ranging in age from 1 - 10 years old. This year you will find gift tags, suggested items to purchase, and more instructions on the the poster near the bulletin board. Please be generous in your purchase of gifts for these individuals.

If you can't get to church and want to sign up for a gift, please contact either Linda Dutton or Lynn Dolinger. In addition, you can donate funds (before December 18) which will help us provide gift cards or buy additional gifts. You can contribute by bringing, or sending, a check to the church office, made out to UUCR specifying "Holiday Sharing" in the memo line, or you can donate online at the church website using the "Donate" button (click here) and "Custom Amount," specifying "Holiday Sharing" in the comment section.

Wrapped gifts with tags must be returned to UUCR by Sunday, December 18! Any monetary donations must be made before December 18 to allow time for us to purchase gift cards or any additional gifts! Questions? Ask Linda Dutton or Lynn Dolinger. Thanks!
Woodland Memorial Garden Accessibility Project
& Informational Meeting
Jim Lavin, Terry Goldzier, and Penny McCrea have been working on options to make our Woodland Memorial Garden more welcoming and accessible.
Currently, in the hallway at church there is a plan drawing with the approximate location of the pathway as well as five photos displayed that represent the appearance of different types of materials for the pathway. With each photo, there is an estimated cost associated with the material choice.

We would like you to review the types of pathways and put a star (there will be stars in an envelope near the photos) on the type you would like to "vote" for. You can choose more than one, if you can’t decide between your favorites.

There will be a informational meeting after the service this week (December 4th), to bring members up to date on the accessibility pathway project. Everyone who is interested should plan to attend.

Thanks, once again, to Jim Lavin for leading this project and to Terry & Penny for joining the task force and adding their expertise to the project. By next summer we will have a pathway that will allow everyone to enjoy the Woodland Memorial Garden.

Winter Solstice Celebration & Potluck
Mark your calendar to celebrate the Solstice overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. Once again our friend Anne Bricker has extended the use of her beautiful home in Rock Hall (at 4870 Huntingfield Road) for this occasion on Wednesday, December 21. Please arrive by 4:15 PM, bring a “potluck” to share, and dress for an outdoor appreciation of the Solstice. Please contact Vida Morley if you have any questions.
Worship Committee Seeks
Service Leader
There is a need for a person to become a service leader for our Sunday morning worship services.

The current members of the Worship Committee and Rev. Sue will offer guidance and support as the new person learns the responsibilities.

Please consider taking on this way to serve UUCR and contact any member of the Leadership Development Committee: Amy Warner at amylydia10@yahoo.com, Lynn Dolinger at lynn.thirdwish@gmail.com, or Diane Shields at dashdiane@gmail.com if you are interested.
Another "Orientation to UUCR" Session
to be Scheduled
The Membership Committee plans to hold another Orientation session in February or March. Please let the committee know if you are interested in attending, and we will pick a date that works for most. Committee members are: Diane Shields, Nancy Holland, Margo Long, and David Biehler.
Recycling Drop-off Center
Opens in Chestertown
Chestertown now has its own recycling drop-off center, opened Nov. 2, behind Vault Storage Co. at the corner of High Street and the traffic circle. Bins and igloos for the full range of recyclables are available in the rear parking lot of the business.
Town manager Bill Ingersoll said he and the town council will continue seeking a reliable contractor to resume curbside pick-ups of those materials. That service ended this past spring when the non-profit Infinity Recycling went out of business.
The new facility is operated by Maryland Environmental Service, a quasi-governmental agency with more than 30 such public drop-off spots on the Mid-Shore. The project came about with support from the town, Kent County, and a one-year contract with Vault Storage.

Pastoral Care and Connection
You are encouraged to share your joys and sorrows with the UUCR Pastoral Associates (see below). This team is a mixed group — but all have had previous life experiences and a variety of professional training in counseling and philosophy. Please contact one, or several of us, if you “want to talk.”
