In 2000, the World Health Organization broadly defined stewardship as “the careful and responsible management of the well-being of the population”, and in the most general terms as “the very essence of good government.”

ReThink Health
The Rippel Foundation’s ReThink Health initiative, with the WIN Network, is building the field of stewardship, revitalizing an age-old concept to meet the demands of this legacy moment.

Through three projects, in partnership with stewards working at multiple scales, ReThink is developing and defining the practice of stewardship that centers people, power, and place--working to instill it as a widespread norm:

Amplifying Stewardship Together (AST) promotes stewardship as a field of practice across the country by working closely with an expanding network of fellow field builders.

Portfolio Design for Healthier Regions (PDHR) works with investors in communities (philanthropies, governments, hospitals, businesses) to shift their investment priorities and design regional portfolios for equitable health and well-being.

Hospital Systems in Transition (HST) focuses on exploring what it takes for hospitals transitioning toward population health to embrace the role of steward within the community ecosystems where they do business.

This edition of the WIN Digest is the second in a three-part series to introduce stewardship, share resources related to stewardship, and highlight how stewards are transforming communities across the country.

Poetry to Build Well-Being
Hospital in Oregon by Marilyn Chin

Shhh, my grandmother is sleeping,
They doped her up with morphine for her last hours.
Her eyes are black and vacant like a deer’s.
She says she hears my grandfather calling.

A deerfly enters through a tear in the screen,
Must’ve escaped from those there sickly Douglas firs.
Flits from ankle to elbow, then lands on her ear.
Together, they listen to the ancient valley.
