Direct flights from India to Canada will resume soon and Moroccan students are now flocking to Chinese universities for their studies. Ireland has even lifted quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated Indian travellers even as the US is waving interviews for some inbound international students.
These bode well for international education. As global vaccination programs continue to provide better protection for international students, hopes are high that the worst is behind us and that this new fall semester will signal the start of better things to come.

Canada-India Direct Flights to Resume September 27
Transport Canada has announced the extension of the Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) that restricts all direct commercial and private passenger flights to Canada from India until September 26, 2021. Once the restriction on direct flights expires, travellers eligible to enter Canada will be able to board direct flights from India to Canada. Travellers will still have to comply with public health measures, such as testing requirements, and possibly quarantine. Additional measures include presenting a proof of negative COVID-19 molecular test.

244 Chinese Students Travel to UK via Charter Flight
Some 244 Chinese students flew to Manchester in the United Kingdom on Saturday via Hainan Airlines. This chartered flight is the first in 2021 that enables students to return to their studies. According to the domestic airline, the municipal government of Chongqing and the Chinese Embassy in the United Kingdom will help send more students to the UK by September and October via charter flights. The airline has also announced that tickets will only be sold to Chinese students who will attend UK education institutions.

Ireland: No Quarantine for Fully Vaccinated Indian Travellers
The government of Ireland has announced plans to restart the processing of short-stay entry visas in its Visa Application Centres (VAC) in India. Also, according to the statement released by the Embassy of Ireland in India, all remaining COVID-19 restrictions on entry visas and preclearance processing have been lifted. Fully vaccinated Indian travellers will no longer be required to undergo mandatory hotel quarantine after Ireland removed India from the list of Designated States for Mandatory Hotel Quarantine.

New Study Australia Employability Hub Is Live
International students in Australia may now access a new online Employability Hub to help them prepare for the global employment market. Other features that the Hub offers include the Study Australia Work Readiness Program, the Study Australia Industry Experience Program, and the volunteer and industry experience information. The Employability Hub intends to connect students to the skills, courses, and opportunities needed in reaching personal and professional goals.

Schools Lost $40 Million in International Student Revenue During COVID Pandemic
New Zealand schools have lost $40 million in overall international student revenue during the pandemic, according to the latest national data. The total revenue has dropped to $139 million in 2020 compared to $179 million in 2019. The Ministry of Education says the full impact of COVID-19 and the global financial downturn is just beginning to be felt. Education experts believe that even once international students can return, numbers will likely take considerable time to rebuild.

Some Students Headed to US May Be Eligible for Interview Waiver
The US Department of State has announced that consular officers may choose to waive the visa interview requirement for some student visa applicants. This waiver would apply only to those applicants who were earlier issued any type of US visa and who have no apparent or potential visa ineligibility. Particularly, if a student now seeking to fly to the US had traveled earlier on a tourist visa, it would be possible for the interview to be waived. The waiver also applies to first-time F, M, and academic J visa applicants who are citizens of a country that participates in the Visa Waiver Program.

There is a rise in the number of international students across Canada despite tuition fee hikes. Memorial University, for instance, revealed that there are now close to 4,000 global learners enrolled and still counting. This is a 10-percent increase compared to fall 2020.

MBBS Students Enrolled in Chinese Universities Look for Mid-Year Transfer to Other Countries
Indian medical students who were enrolled in China are now looking at mid-course transfers to institutes in India and other countries. For almost 20 months, many Indian medical students have not been able to return to their campuses in China due to travel restrictions. The MBBS course requires students to gain practical experience but with almost two years that they have been left stranded, many of them are losing confidence in their skills and knowledge. RIght now, only medical students from South Korea and the United States have been allowed to return to China.

Moroccan Students Flock to Chinese Universities
Over 500 Moroccan students have applied to Chinese universities this academic year. The cheaper cost of living in China than in other developed countries is making it an attractive destination for Moroccan students. The rental cost in medium-sized cities in China is 45.86% lower than in Morocco, while the prices of food in restaurants in Chinese cities are 11.70% cheaper on the average. China also offers four types of scholarships to Moroccan students. These include scholarships granted either by the Chinese government, provinces, cities, or local universities.

UK Records 125% Increase in Sponsored Study Grants for Nigerians — 11,361 Visas in One Year
According to the latest data from the UK government, Nigeria accounts for 25 percent of the total number of foreign nationals who are on scholarships in the country. Within a year, the number of Nigerian students in the UK who received sponsored grants has doubled by 125 percent, with over 11,000 study visas granted still under review. The UK government has revealed that in June 2020, the number of Nigerian students was only 9,066 but by June 2021, the figure rose to 20,427.

Parents Say UK Visa Hitch an Obstacle to Education
Some Thai students are experiencing slow visa approvals and a drastic increase in travel costs after the United Kingdom placed Thailand on a COVID-19 restriction travel list. The delays in visa processing have resulted in frustration among students and parents whose children are unable to return to class in the UK in time. Some parents also lament that visa processing now takes over a month but the normal process should only take about 15 days. The British Embassy in Bangkok has confirmed that it is currently experiencing a high demand for visas from students which is why it’s taking longer to process applications.
