The Trona Pinnacles are a sight to behold in the California Desert National Conservation Area. More than 500 tufa spires rise from the bed of the Searles Lake Basin. The spires vary in size with some being as high as 140 feet. The pinnacles are porous rock formed as a deposit of calcium carbonite when springs interact with other bodies of water. In other words, they were all formed underwater. The pinnacles range in age from 10,000 to 100,000 years old. |
