Art Space Update

Music Space

The SAC has been hearing a lot about the lack and disappearance of space for music, both rehearsal and performance venues. However, there are efforts being made to preserve and create new space regionally. One such effort is 55 Morrissey in Dorchester which secured space for those being displaced from the Sound Museum of Allston. This project is a partnership of the Art Stays Here Coalition and The Record Co.

We continue to explore: What can Somerville do to support the music scene? We have hosted several conversations around music and nightlife for our cultural conversations which will inform the Cultural Capacity Plan. We are hosting a small musician focus group to talk with Mayor Ballantyne as part of the Mayor’s Listening Tour for art spaces. In addition to those initiatives, we are talking to various musicians and music industry creatives to understand needs within our community. Somerville based musician Mike Gintz has provided us with a great list of rehearsal space needs outlining must-haves and ideal amenities to aid us in our work. This is just his initial thoughts on what a music rehearsal space needs and he has been gracious enough to open it up to community comments and suggestions, please read and add your suggestions here.

Musicians where do you Rehearse and Perform?

As part of our ongoing art space initiatives, SAC is interested in understanding where musicians rehearse and perform. If you are a Somerville musician please fill out this short questionnaire.
