October marks Bullying Prevention Awareness Month, and we at the DuPage ROE want to help you create an environment where bullying is not acceptable – whether that be in the classroom, on school grounds, or online. In the Resources section below, you will find links to do just that.

WORK-BASED LEARNING AND YOUTH APPRENTICESHIPS
The DuPage ROE is delighted to announced the rollout of a new, hands-on work opportunity and career exploration experience for high school students in DuPage County. The DuPage Work-Based Learning and Youth Apprenticeship Collaboration, which was developed in partnership with College of DuPage Hire-Ed and GPS Education Partners, is designed to help students ages 16 and older access employment, education, training, and support services to succeed in the labor market. Students enrolled in this program are paid student apprentices with local business partners. Want to learn more about this innovative new program? SHORT-TERM SUBSTITUTE TEACHER TRAINING
Our next training for those interested in being a substitute teacher is scheduled for November 9 from 5-7 pm. Individuals with 60 hours of college credit may apply for a short-term license. This training will be held online via Zoom, and there is a $25 registration fee. Please share the attached flyer with anyone who might be interested.

· October 26, 2021: The focus of this meeting will be a discussion of the District 99 master facility plan, with a discussion led by Rob Lang, Lisa Lichtman, and Isabelle Menke of District 99. The session will begin at Downers Grove North High School and then proceed to Downers Grove South High School.

BULLYING PREVENTION MONTH RESOURCES
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in 2019, about 22 percent of students ages 12–18 reported being bullied at school during the school year. In 2019, about 16 percent of students in grades 9–12 reported being electronically bullied during the previous 12 months.

CYBERBULLYING

  • Dealing with Cyberbullies: These tips and recommendations outline what cyberbullying is, why it has become a problem, and how to protect students.
  • Tips for Teachers: This webpage provides information for teachers, school personnel, and staff to identify warning signs a child is being cyberbullied or is cyberbullying, as well as strategies to prevent and address it.

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING, SCHOOL CLIMATE & MENTAL HEALTH

  • National Technical Assistance Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports: This program supports schools, districts, and states to build a framework to improve outcomes for students with, or at-risk for, disabilities, enhance school climate and school safety, and improve conditions for learning to promote the well-being of all students.
  • School Climate Improvement Resource Package: This set of resources, reference manuals, and action guides outlines ways school leaders, personnel, and community partners can improve school climate and create an environment where students feel safe, supported, and accepted.
  • Mental Health and School Safety: This topic page on SchoolSafety.gov features resources, best practices, and strategies to support the implementation of mental health support and access initiatives at your school.
CALLING ALL STEM EDUCATORS
We invite you to browse the STEM DuPage website for loads of STEM information, including resources you can use in your classroom and with families. Also, because we value you & the wonderful work you do for DuPage kids, we will be offering some great prizes in our Website Challenge now posted on the site. The Challenge opens October 1, and entries will be accepted through November 1.


DRUG EDUCATION PORTAL: FREE RESOURCE
Candor Health Education has a newly updated, FREE Drug Education Portal for students in grades 7-12. Using graphic novels, animated shorts, trivia, games, and more, it will show the impact of certain drugs on the developing brain and body. Enhance your current substance abuse prevention lessons with this portal that includes information on alcohol, opioids, marijuana, and addiction. Your students will enjoy playing the NEW 8-pixel interactive game that lets them create their own avatar and then choose their own path as they navigate through everyday situations and make decisions along the way.   • Tues. Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. via Zoom. Dr. Marc Brackett — "Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves and Our Society Thrive." Marc Brackett, Ph.D., is the founder and director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and a professor in their Child Study Center. Emotions matter at home, at school, and in the workplace. How we feel influences our thoughts, ability to learn, decisions, relationships, health, creativity, and everyday performance.   • Thurs. Oct. 13, at 6 p.m. via Zoom. Dr. Laurie Santos — "What Makes Humans Happy: Strategies for Finding Joy Today." Providing the secret to happier and more motivated students is the mission of Dr. Laurie Santos. She's a Yale University professor who created "The Science of Happiness: Psychology and the Good Life," which remains the most popular course in the history of the school.   • Wed. Oct. 20, at Noon AND 7 pm, via Zoom. Ana Homayoun — "That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week: Helping Distracted Students Organize/Integrate Their Online & Real Life Worlds." As students adapt to changing school systems, it becomes increasingly important to help them integrate and organize their real life and digital worlds. To help set up our youth to be socially, emotionally and academically successful, noted author Homayoun will offer strategies on how to support students in building executive functioning skills and gaining perspective on the latest trends in the world of social media. ILLINOIS AGING TOGETHER
Health & Medicine Policy Research Group is conveningIllinois Aging Together, a statewide movement for aging equity. This campaign seeks to have the State of Illinois demonstrate a new level of commitment to supporting Illinois’ rapidly aging population, families and caregivers, and equitable aging across the life course.  
 
Part of this campaign is the Illinois Aging Together Policy Academy. The Academy is comprised of two 90-minute sessions, integrating technical information with group discussion. This is an excellent opportunity for learning, advocacy, and networking for individuals with personal and professional interest in aging equity and can accommodate diverse levels of experience and knowledge. There are currently three Academies scheduled: 
  • October 22 and 29 (Fridays 9-10:30AM). Register here.

  • November 29 and December 6 (Mondays 6:30-8PM). Register here.  
This educational opportunity is for interested individuals to discover more about trends in aging in Illinois and to learn how to describe these trends through social and health equity lenses. Attendees will learn how to apply this knowledge in advocacy settings while gaining the tools they need to effectively engage in the Illinois Aging Together campaign as an ambassador.
