October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) and this month offers us the opportunity to center survivors of abuse and violence as the experts of their lives. We can recommit to learning about domestic violence and the patterns of control and abuse, to being better allies and supporters for our peers and family members, and to recognize the systems of oppression in which we participate. Most of all, this is an opportunity to recommit to creating a safe, empowered and healthy world for our families and our communities.
This year’s theme is #Every1KnowsSome1 to highlight the fact that domestic violence can happen to anyone and is extremely prevalent in our communities. Narika's 86% increase in clients served is testament to this fact. To me, #Everyone1KnowsSome1 also reminds me of the countless friends and peers who never reached out to me with their stories of abuse until I moved into this work and it is a reminder that though we are not obligated to complete this work, neither are we free to abandon it. (paraphrased from the Talmud)
Narika will be sharing social media content to continue raising awareness about domestic violence, how it impacts us differently based on our identities, and how we can be a part of the solution.
Please join us in recommitting to a violence free world by attending our events, amplifying our social media content and initiating these conversations with friends, peers and families.
