The light at the farm has been fairly incredible these last few weeks. Being in New England in Fall, witnessing the effect of being tilted away from the sun, the slanting light and the changing colors of the flora due to decreasing rates of photosynthesis and lower temperatures is nothing short of miraculous.

Wow, I was just thinking about the earth rotating around the sun, and then remembered that the static orbital movement I was taught in elementary school is no longer the presiding theory of planetary movement (based on a viral youtube video I watched sometime in the last 10 years). So I looked it up, and first, a google search wasn't the best start - a lot of junk to sift through. But I landed on a Forbes article. Apparently the vortex theory (the sun is hurtling through space with all the planets spinning around behind) hasn't held, and now the earth and the rest of the planets, are rotating in a single plane again, while the entire solar system, in formation, rotates around the center of the galaxy.

We are so small. And will never actually understand anything.

I found out yesterday that there is an effort to rematriate a 64 acres portion of the Black Swamp in Millis, MA to the Eastern Woodland Rematriation Collective:

"We are a collective of Black, Nipmuc, and Massachusett women, matriarchs, and femmes and their loved ones who have the opportunity to purchase Black Swamp and return to our ancestral homelands.
These lands are of historical significance to our ancestors and our present vision for rematriation. We are wanting to create a sanctuary for housing, planting and growing, kinship, restoration, and ceremony."

There is a potential donor meeting tomorrow evening if anyone is interested. I'm going to attend so I'll have more information at a later date.

And now - I'm supposed to be writing a grant. So I'll say goodbye until next week. I can see more time for email writing in the near future. . . when the sweet potatoes are out, the garlic planted and the grant submitted . . .
Fruit Shares are over but we will have fruit for sale during CSA pick up this week! Bosc Pears, Macoun Apples, Spencer Apples and a few other varieties. Apples are $2.50/lb and pears are $3/lb. All from Autumn Hill Orchard in Groton, growing using IPM practices.

I eat a pear every day right now. They are my favorite fruit.

Recipes from Jess

ROASTED CABBAGE WITH WALNUTS AND PARMESAN
These are AMAZING. Crispy wedges drizzled with a lemony vinaigrette and dusted with parmesan cheese. My whole family complained when they heard what we were having but then gobbled them ALL down and asked for more.

RED CABBAGE PORTERHOUSE STEAKS WITH HERB BUTTER
Serve this up with some french fries and green beans and I doubt you'll hear a single complaint about the missing meat.

PUMPKIN PUREE
This is my go-to recipe for roasting pumpkins. I freeze it in baggies with 15 oz in each (so it matches what's in a can of pumpkin since that's what most recipes call for) and use it in my favorite pumpkin dishes all winter long.

PUMPKIN BREAD WITH SALTED MAPLE BUTTER
On the off chance you have leftovers of the maple butter, it's also delicious on pancakes/waffles, toast and sweet potatoes or really any winter squash.

MEXICAN COLESLAW
The perfect accompaniment to tacos or fajitas or it can even serve as a vegetarian main dish (but I would bump up the beans to use a whole can to make sure you're getting all your protein). It calls for a bag of coleslaw mix but I just shred up a mix of green and red cabbage and carrots.
REMEMBER! IF YOU WANT TO SWITCH YOUR PICK UP DAY I PREFER 48 HOURS NOTICE WHENEVER POSSIBLE!

If you can't make it, please feel free to send someone else to pick up your share, or reach out to us and we can coordinate an alternate pick up plan.
