Message from the CEO
Dr Louise Schaper
Cautious welcome for this digital passport option: As the Prime Minister foreshadows greater travel freedoms and lockdown reprieve for COVID-vaccinated individuals, digital proof has arrived as a serious and valid option. Australians who are fully vaccinated can now use a digital certificate as proof of vaccination. The certificate is automatically generated and made available on the Express Plus Medicare app.

Earlier this year, the Institute endorsed the use of international digital passports with a global standard to record vaccination status that can be digitally shared across systems and borders. There is going to be a need for a digital vaccination record that seamlessly travels with the individual, therefore global agreement on the data standards will be essential. Specifically, many countries need a valid, secure digital record of vaccination which is recognised by other countries, given the travel patterns of people around the world and the challenges they’re facing in managing outbreaks.

However, providing a digital vaccination record that spans international borders is quite different to rewarding COVID-vaccinated Australians with travel freedoms. As leaders in the digital health community, when it comes to digital vaccine “passports”, we will be advocating for careful steps and a measured response to consider the protection of health data, privacy and most importantly equity, access and individual rights.

What do we really mean by personalised patient experience? What role will consumers play in driving the interaction with their healthcare providers? What is the value being created through data-driven insights to reshape policy and service delivery?
