Faculty Take on UDL and Digital Accessibility
sign with four directions
By Amy Holmes

During DDCC's Summer Institute earlier this month, faculty developed their Universal Design for Learning (UDL) skills in conjunction with digital accessibility. UDL is a set of guidelines, while digital accessibility is regulated by a set of laws. UDL and digital accessibility can be used by both faculty and staff to promote student success.

Eileen Hammond and Paul Stevens are just two of the 19 Summer Institute participants who revised assessments to make them more student friendly. Eileen teaches communication at the Davie Campus and Paul teaches biology at the Davidson Campus.

Eileen created a series of Choose Your Own Adventure assignments that allow students to choose how they demonstrate their learning, including engaging with art and music, performing, and reviewing case studies. The assessment provides a clear purpose, instructions, and grading criteria (specifications grading) that are aligned with learning outcomes. Additionally, the document itself is formatted using heading styles so that students can easily navigate it.

Paul started with his Wildlife Habitat application assignment that needed some sprucing up! He used the TILT framework and provided students with a reason for completing the assignment, skills they would practice, and criteria for how to succeed. He also included common mistakes that students make. The bulleted format and checkboxes make it simple for students to follow their progress. Finally, students can choose to create the actual habitat or save their plans for the future. Check out the updated Wildlife Habitat assignment.
