Glenridge Middle Community Member

I hope this late August edition finds you having enjoyed a relaxing weekend as this Monday we already begin the 4th week of the new academic year. Please remember that on Monday soccer season also gets underway with both our boys and girls playing at home. It means a lot to our Lions to have your support, especially at home, so please come on out and cheer them on!

Thank you very much for reading and please take care to look over the PTA update below. This is a wonderful organization that does so much for our both teachers and students. I hope you will consider getting a membership if you have yet to do so.

Rigor in the Classroom
Science with Mr. Moreton
Mr. Moreton's Honors Science classes have been designing their own experiments to test properties of M&M’s.
Question: What liquid will dissolve an M&M's color the fastest?
Hypothesis: We think the vinegar will dissolve the M&M's color the fastest because vinegar is an acid.
* Students also listed all their materials
In addition to their lab questions and hypothesis, the students also wrote out their procedural steps and a data table.

Student Health & Safety
Motorists: School is Back in Session and Your Awareness is Important to Students' Safety
Be alert and watch for children, especially near schools, bus stops, school buses and in school parking lots
To keep students safe while driving:
• Be especially careful when children are present in school zones and residential areas and pay attention to lower speed limits in school zones.
• Watch for and obey signals from school crossing guards.
• Only drive or park in authorized areas to drop off or pick up children at school.
• All drivers moving in either direction on a two-way street must stop for a school bus displaying a stop signal and must remain stopped until the road is clear of children AND the school bus stop arm is withdrawn.
• On a highway divided by a paved median, all drivers moving in either direction must stop for a school bus displaying a stop signal and must remain stopped until the road is clear of children AND the school bus stop arm is withdrawn. (see diagram, MULTI-LANE)
• The only time traffic approaching an oncoming school bus does not need to stop, is if there is a raised barrier such as a concrete divider or at least five feet of unpaved space separating the lanes of traffic. (see diagram, DIVIDED HIGHWAY)
For your safety and the safety of others always use caution around pedestrians, school buses and bicyclists.
Monday's Motivational Moment!
NO SHORTCUTS
William Danforth, who became the owner of the huge Ralston Purina pet food company, learned a lesson about success when he was a young man. He said, "When I was sixteen, I came to St. Louis to attend high school. It was a mile from where I lived to the school. A teacher, who lived nearby, and I would start for school at the same time every morning. But he always beat me there. Even back then I didn't want to be beaten, and so I tried all the shortcuts. Day after day, however, he arrived ahead of me. Then I discovered how he did it. When he came to each street crossing, he would run to the other curb. The thing that put him ahead of me was just that "that little extra.'"

There are no shortcuts
to any place worth going.
