Thank you to our 2022 Annual Meeting Sponsors

From the President

The countdown to our Annual Meeting is on! With an early meeting this year, we will all be gathering near Washington, DC before you know it.

This promises to be one of our best meetings ever, when we kick it all off with a special dinner honoring our founding CEO, Larry Bauer, on Thursday, September 15. Friday, September 16 will be packed with another remarkable line-up, with the annual Innovator’s Network, as well as new high-impact pre-conference workshops on the new ACGME residency requirements and on the social determinants of health. Our host committee has arranged three outstanding plenary presentations, and your colleagues from across the region will be presenting on a wide array of pertinent and interesting topics. All this, along with our usual ALSO Instructor Course, the “Preparing to Succeed in Practice” seminars for residents, and the IMPLICIT meetings will fill up the agenda.

Although the programming sounds incredible, we are probably most excited to feel the unparalleled energy of an in-person FMEC Annual Meeting and have the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and strike up “hallway conversations” with new friends. And, of course, with the early meeting date, our 2022 Residency Fair is even more important than usual. In addition to protecting space for medical students and residencies to come together right on the cusp of this year’s recruiting season, it may also be one of the few opportunities for face-to-face contact.

The excitement is building! What is your Family Medicine Superpower? Get ready to unleash it soon at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City!

Share your stories and experiences

Have you wanted to share your stories/experiences/ideas but never started? Join this new “publishing circle” with 8 – 10 other writers who want a venue for communicating a family medicine perspective to the general public as well as to the family medicine community. No-cost, online publishing platforms that include blogs, articles and videos are optimal ways to get messages to larger markets of health care consumers, professionals, and policy influencers. Many online blog sites are available that provide easy-to-use venues for sharing the output of the group. In a small group format, we will be a micro-community of writing practice. To join this group, you should commit to writing a message at least once every 3 months. The group members will support one another’s idea development and writing. The group will decide on meeting cadences and will be sounding boards for each other. Family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and behavioral health professionals working in family medicine settings are welcome to join. The group will be facilitated by Jack Ricchiuto, who is a 30-time author, article writer, and daily blogger since 2002. For more information, please contact FMEC CEO Emeritus Laurence Bauer, MSW, MEd at [email protected] or 937/478-6039.

AHECs prepare future health professionals

According to the National Area Health Education Consortium (AHEC) Organization, nearly 630,000 people participated in its 2020-2021 Health Workforce Program. The National AHEC Organization reached this huge group of future health professionals through pipeline programs that expose students to careers, clinical training that improves their readiness and ability to serve in primary care and underserved settings, continuing education, and more. As part of AHEC Scholars, over 7,000 future health professionals enhanced their leadership skills for the rapidly changing healthcare system, with nearly 90% reporting that they became confident in using their skills to provide care for rural and underserved populations and in understanding how social determinants of health affect communities. If your family medicine residency program is not collaborating with the local AHEC but would like to, contact Scott Allen at [email protected].
