PRINCIPAL'S DESK

August 26, 2022

Hello Tiger Students and Families,

As a collective staff, we continue to work and plan for an exciting start to this school year. As the last few days of summer break come to an end, and our first day with students is scheduled for Tuesday September 6th, I want to assure you that our goals for every student remain consistent. The feeling of being safe, valued, respected and an integral part of our LC community is a top priority for me and our staff. It is important for students to give their best effort every day academically, exhibit appropriate behavior, and attend classes daily and be on time. These characteristics help all student be successful in school and will help them in life beyond high school. We have an excellent tradition of our students performing at very high level in many areas, and we look forward to continuing this tradition.

To help support a safer school environment, our student parking lots will get increased lighting, a security light type device that circulates a bright blue light that coves the entire parking lot. Cameras will be installed, and signs will be put in place indicating that the lots are under video surveillance. We, with the support from district leadership, will continue to monitor the progress of our parking lots. Please continue to encourage your student to not leave anything visible in their cars, make sure their car doors are always locked, and the windows are up completely.

With school starting in twelve days, please take some time to read through our entire newsletter. It provides important dates and information for students and families regarding the start of school and events that will occur next week and the first month of school. I hope to see many of you at these events and spend time getting to know you and your student.

Looking forward to seeing our students soon,

Mr. Corley

Principal

Launch Conferences

We want to see you! We are offering Launch Conferences on Thursday, September 1 and Friday, September 2 to start the school year. We are excited to launch the 2022-23 school year by getting to know you and your student. Please sign up for a conference at www.SpokaneSchools.org/conferences.

At the conference we will provide an overview school logistics (verifying your contact information, helping you get connected to PowerSchool, check out a laptop before school begins, check internet needs, highlight the importance of regular attendance, and connect you to school and community resources).

If you are unable to come to your launch conference we will check out computers to students on Thursday, September 8 (our picture day).

Please contact Phil High-Edward (PhilH@SpokaneSchools.org / 509-354-6941 if you have any questions about our Launch Conferences.

STUDENT SERVICES UPDATES

Parents and Guardians,

Your Student Services team is excited to start the 22-23 school year building our LC community on a foundation of Responsibility, Accountability, and Respect (The Tiger RAR). As we approach the first day of school, please have a conversation with your child regarding the following areas to ensure we are all starting with common expectations.

The commitments of the Student Services team are to:

  • Encourage timeliness and maximize student learning opportunities through fostering accountability and working to ensure students are in class every day, every period, on time.
  • Teach 21st century skills by empowering our students to identify appropriate personal technology usage in a professional environment.
  • Respect this beautiful, historic building by monitoring bathrooms, hallways, and common areas to ensure a clean, safe, and functional environment for the whole LCHS community.
  • Prioritize learning and minimize class disruptions by having students eat lunch exclusively in the Commons. Classroom hallways and the Library will not be accessible during lunch.

Thank you, parents, guardians, and stakeholders, for all you do to support our students, school, and community so “Every Tiger, Every Day, has Access to More!”

Sincerely,

Brandon Bouge

INFORMATION & UPDATES

Schedules and Schedule Changes

Schedules are available to students and parents in PowerSchool. Schedules will NOT be mailed home, so log into your account to ensure you have the correct login/password.

  • If you are doing Running Start and your schedule still shows LC classes, please email your counselor so we can drop the classes you do not need.
  • If you don't remember your login, do NOT try to reset it on the site, it will not work, instead email Theresa Meyer for reset help.
  • If PowerSchool prompts you that your password has been reset by an administrator, follow the directions on the screen to reset (new passwords must be 8 characters and only use letters/numbers).
  • Your schedule (teachers and periods) is likely to change over the next week as we balance classes. Keep checking PowerSchool for any updates.

If you have a schedule change request due to an error on your schedule or you want to change a class, contact your counselor (Please know that many classes are full, so not every request change can be made):

The last day to make student-initiated schedule changes is Friday September, 16. Thank you!

We cannot accommodate specific teacher or period requests due to full classes, balancing, and the complexity of the schedule. Thank you for your understanding.

School Bus Info

This year there are changes to our transportation system for students as we are partnering with Spokane Transit Authority to get students to school and back home.

Students who live within 1.5 miles will need to walk to school or attain a Transit Card from STA. Students in our attendance area who live outside of the 1.5 mile radius will receive a temporary SPS Connect card at Launch Conferences to ride the STA if they reside near an STA route. Students in our attendance area who live outside of the 1.5 mile radius and they are not near an STA route will board a yellow bus.

We will have more bus information next week for school bus stops.

If you ride the bus for NewTech, we will have more information next week.

You can register for the school bus here.

Please contact Phil High-Edward if you have any questions. PhilH@SpokaneSchools.org / (509) 354-6941.

This is a separate event from the Launch Conferences designed to provide information to new students. The doors will be open at 5:30pm and the presentation will begin promptly at 6:00pm in the LC Auditorium. We look forward to seeing you there! If you have questions, please contact Brandon Bouge

Immunization Information

Please be aware that all students in Spokane Public Schools are required by state law to be fully vaccinated prior to the first day of attendance (RCW 28A.210.080). If the student’s immunization record is not complete, the student will be excluded from school. If your child is exempt from vaccination, please ensure that your school receives this documentation. At this time, the requirement to be fully vaccinated does not include the COVID vaccine.

LC Yearbook Senior Photos and Senior Ads

LC Senior Parents, please take a moment to review the attached documents for information on Senior Photos and Senior Ads for the 2022-2023 LC yearbook. Booking your Senior Photos early is a good idea to ensure you are able to meet the October 31 deadline. Those who are not able to book Senior Photos can schedule to get a free photo taken by a yearbook photographer in the fall by emailing lcyearbook@spokaneschools.org.

Activity and Athletic Registration

Registration for Spokane Public Schools athletics and activities is now being done through FinalForms, an online data management service that replaces FamilyID. FinalForms saves data from season-to-season and year-to-year, meaning families will never need to enter the same information twice. FinalForms also pre-populates data wherever possible, saving time for families registering multiple students.

To get started, click on the Parent Playbook. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Use Support” if you need assistance. You may review your data at any time to verify it is current. You will be required to sign your forms once per year and after any update.

IMPORTANT: You will receive an account confirmation email from FinalForms. Please click the link and follow the steps to login and access your student(s) information. If you do not receive the email and want to register your student, please contact Dave Hughes.

Registration for fall sports is open now.

Paying for Yearbook, GSL, and Parking

GSL, Yearbooks, and parking permits are on sale now in the Business Office:

  • $42 student GSL Card (required for all athletes)
  • $47 Yearbook, yearbook pre‐sales end 12/16/22.
  • $5 student parking pass (must be purchased in the Business Office) or $90 for a meter pass. You may only purchase one parking pass this year, so you must choose between the lots and the meters.
  • Optional: Donation to Yearbook fund for students who are unable to purchase one. Every dollar donated helps a family in financial need. Thank you for your donation!

Free Breakfast & Lunch for All!

Breakfast and Lunch is free again this year for all LC students. We will be asking that all families complete the CEP survey during Launch Conferences. CEP is the Community Eligibility Provision. It is the program Spokane Public Schools runs to offer free meals to all students at school for the 2022-2023 school year. SPS is able to participate in this program thanks to the passage of a bill in the Washington Legislature.

Although meals are free to all students this school year, filling out the Family Income Survey helps ensure school funding is maintained for essential programs. Students who qualify can get added benefits like Pandemic EBT, waived sports & waived AP/SAT testing fees, and many others.

You can get a head start by filling out the CEP survey now.

Lockers

In the first few days of school, we will be issuing lockers to students who would like to use one. We will share the sign up process in the next LC News.

Student and Parent/Visitor Parking

Parent/Visitor Parking: LC does NOT have designated visitor parking, so you can park at any of the metered spots across the street. For after-hours events, you can park for free in any of the parking lots under the freeway. The doors to the Commons building are handicap accessible.

Student Drop-off/Pick-Up: Buses pick up students all around the perimeter of the school. Please do not park in these locations before school/after school. We recommend arriving for pick up after the buses have left at 2:40pm.

Student Parking: LC students can park in the two freeway lots (in front of the Field House and in front of the church to the east). Be sure to display your student parking permit to avoid getting a ticket in the student lots. Student parking permits can be purchased in the Business Office for $5.

The lots under the freeway directly in front of the main building and the Commons and the parking garage are only for LC staff and are monitored and ticketed for cars without staff permits.

Low-Cost Internet Access

The Affordable Connectivity Program is an FCC benefit program that helps ensure that households can afford the broadband they need for work, school, healthcare and more. The benefit provides a discount of up to $30 per month toward internet service for eligible households and up to $75 per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands. Eligible households can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers if they contribute more than $10 and less than $50 toward the purchase price. The Affordable Connectivity Program is limited to one monthly service discount and one device discount per household. ⇒ Learn who is eligible and how to enroll here.

Your account will give you access to AP Classroom resources and access for ordering your AP exams (we will order exams later in September). This account is not connected to your school accounts, so you will need to save the login and password (LC teachers do not have access to your login info, so if you forgot your login info, you will need to recover it on the AP website). Click here to go to the College Board website to either make sure you can access your account from last year or to create a new one if you are taking your first AP class.
