Beneficial Electrification League

April 2023

The Beneficial Electrification League received a letter from Navajo Nation President Dr. Buu Nygren endorsing the benefits of smart grid investments for the Tribe and its communities.

REGISTER NOW: BEL to hold virtual electric water heater summit on May 4

On May 4 from 1:00 - 3:00 PM ET, the Beneficial Electrification League (BEL) will hold a virtual summit on the state of the electric water heating industry, including updates on heat pump water heater and grid-interactive water heater installation projects. This summit is a part of BEL’s Weatherization/Electrification Together initiative.

The summit will discuss new electric water heater research from GDS Associates and The Brattle Group commissioned by BEL. During the summit, we will hear from water heater technology vendors and electric cooperatives.

Speakers on the agenda include BEL Sponsors GDS Associates, Armada Power, La Plata Electric Association, Great River Energy, Aquanta, Rheem, and A.O. Smith.

BEL and cooperatives support Navajo Nation efforts, and vice versa

At the November Arizona Beneficial Electrification Leadership Summit, Navajo Tribal Utility Authority (NTUA) General Manager Wally Haase shared the story of Light Up Navajo, a project bringing electricity to the 14,000 Navajo Nation homes still without electricity. We are pleased to see the project now includes many cooperatives who have joined the volunteer effort in 2023. Forging new connections and building new friendshipsthis is a perfect illustration of what happens at electrification summits.

BEL recruited the NTUA to join its Community-Owned Grid Resilience and Innovation Project (CO-GRIP) proposal submitted to the Department of Energy. Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren expressed support for the project in a letter highlighting the community benefits of this infrastructure investment. If funded, CO-GRIP would help alleviate the extreme energy burden in the Navajo Nation.

Georgia Electrification Leadership Summit a success!

The Georgia Institute of Technology’s Policy and Innovation Center and Wells Fargo co-sponsored the Southeast region’s second statewide electrification summit on March 22 in Atlanta. Georgia is a leader in transportation electrification: Rivian and electric school bus manufacturer Blue Bird Corporation both have plants in the state. U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff opened the meeting virtually, and Dr. Ángel Cabrera gave the keynote address for a packed day that featured stakeholder dialogues on economic development and the electrification of transportation, residential homes, and commercial technology (agenda and slides available here).

BEL applies to DOE Grid Deployment Office for smart grid funding

In March, BEL submitted a joint proposal to the Department of Energy’s Grid Deployment Office for $38.1 million in funding from the Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) program. BEL is grateful to our 16 utility partners who contributed mightily to this effort. The diversity of community, Tribal, and labor organizations supporting the project speaks to the strength of the community-owned utility model.

Asserting the value of grid modernization to local economic development, the proposal includes investments in the following technologies:

  • Sensors, fault detection, and automation to reduce the risk and impact of outages.
  • Advanced metering infrastructure, new smart switches, and automation to increase system capacity and flexibility.
  • Seamless communication and visibility between the distribution system and the bulk power grid to tap the rapidly expanding array of distributed energy resources, improve efficiency, and make demand response programs more robust.

The proposal includes a plan for broad communication, transparency, and information sharing over the life of the program to achieve economies of scale and share lessons and replicable program models.

If funded, the project will enable hundreds of local communities in 15 states to access the benefits of these technologies while laying a foundation for accelerated deployment in other regions.

BEL briefs Congressional caucus on electrification opportunities in agriculture

BEL President Keith Dennis joined the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service Administrator Andrew Berke to brief the bicameral Electrification Caucus on the potential benefits of electrifying our nation’s farms. The Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry has been holding hearings in preparation for the reauthorization of the Farm Bill.
