Happy 4th of July!
The Fourth of July—also known as Independence Day or July 4th—has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution.

On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson.

Learning Ally Tool Helps
Reluctant Readers Love Books
“A student who used to be a reluctant reader – who was previously not able to read the books that his peers were reading – is now excitedly reading his way through numerous books thanks to a new tool called Learning Ally. When Instructional Coach Laurie LaVassar was able to offer the student books like “Guts,” by Raina Telgemeier and “The Terrible Two” by Mac Barnett, but in a format that is just right for him to access, it made a world of difference.”

“Learning Ally is an audiobook program that was developed based on brain science and instructional practice research. It’s designed to help students recognize words, build language comprehension and increase literacy skills. Students who struggle with decoding, fluency, reading comprehension, or who are blind or visually impaired or have another disability that prevents them from reading standard print may be eligible to use Learning Ally. An IEP or 504 Plan is not required. If you feel your child may be eligible, contact your child’s classroom teacher or English Language Arts teacher.*”

“The [Issaquah Schools Foundation] granted the district $10,000 for the [Learning Ally] pilot. Principals were asked to apply to be part of the project, and when five schools expressed interest, the district funded the trial for the other two buildings. The pilot at Clark and Cedar Trails elementaries, Maywood and Pine Lake middle schools and Liberty High School showed how useful the tool is, and that students at all schools can benefit from its supports. The district now has a five-year contract with Learning Ally, which is funded in part by ISF.”
