First In-Person White Coat Ceremony Since 2019 Focuses on Shared Humanity and Social Justice
After two years of virtual ceremonies, the 2022 White Coat Ceremony was a stirring
in-person celebration. The event marked an important rite of passage into the medical
profession for this year’s incoming class of UCSF medical students.

“At the UCSF school of medicine and UCSF at large, we have a long history of social activism,” said UCSF School of Medicine Dean Talmadge E. King, Jr., MD. “We count on you to champion our goal of making UCSF a place where people from all
backgrounds feel they belong and can be successful.”

AOC Initiative Launches News Curricular Review Tool and Faculty Consultations

The AOC Initiative team recently developed a Curricular Review Tool to guide faculty in considering how to integrate anti-oppressive content and approaches into their courses. The goal of this tool is to raise questions that warrant in-depth review and discussion during session adaptation and development.

If after using the AOC Initiative Curricular Review Tool faculty would like additional support discussing anti-oppression/DEI in teaching approaches and/or curricular content, individual consultations are also available. Monthly sessions, facilitated by Michelle Guy, MD, Associate Director, AOC Initiative, Faculty Development, are available to faculty upon request.

Education CQI Highlight
The Bridges Curriculum Executive Committee recently approved two new innovations to improve the educational experience. These include a redesign of the existing ARCH Weeks curriculum and a new Student Progress Committee designed to provide longitudinal feedback for students during their clerkships.
Student Feedback Guides Redesign of ARCH Weeks to Physician Identity Weeks

Based on student feedback and in response to the evolving needs of students entering medical school, ARCH Weeks are being redesigned and renamed Physician Identity Weeks to reflect the focus on developing each medical student’s identity as a physician.

Each Physician Identity Week will provide space for reflection and personal growth, opportunities to work with peers, coaches, and other facilitators, and times to pursue activities related to career exploration as well as para-curricular activities of interest.

Medical students in the class of 2026 will be the first to participate in Physician Identity Weeks. Medical students in the classes of 2023, 2024, and 2025 will continue to participate in ARCH Weeks and can expect to see changes over the next year to reflect a shift in focus to developing physician identity.
Foundations 2 Student Progress Committee (SPC) Formed to Improve Longitudinal Feedback to Clerkship Students

The Foundations 2 Operations Committee created a new Foundations 1 Student Progress Committee to capture and monitor individual student progress across the block clerkships. The goal of the committee is to provide meaningful longitudinal feedback to students and their coaches on students' clerkship performance. The pilot of this new program will begin in August during the ARCH Week 6 program.
