Interim Week 2021-2022

We are excited to share that the Liberty Education Foundation recently awarded EDGE a grant to support our first Interim session. Our first interim session will take place March 7 - 10, 2022! An interim session allows all EDGE learners the opportunity for week-long deep dives into unique travel, work, or academic experiences. Interim sessions allow students to engage in topics and experiences that they may not have previously considered or explored, and help students build confident identities in new contexts.

Learning during interim sessions will challenge students to apply knowledge and skills from multiple subject areas to the experience. Throughout the week, students will create learning evidence for their academic classes through project design, written artifacts, multimedia presentations and more.

A unique aspect of the construction of interim sessions is the student ownership that will be embedded into the process. During Fall 2021, students will have the opportunity to learn about the concept of interim weeks, and work in student teams to research, design, and pitch an interim session offering.

Student teams will pitch their interim session proposal to a panel of teachers, administrators, and Liberty Foundation members, who will serve as judges to determine which interim ideas move forward to the implementation phase and how they are funded. Thank you, Liberty Education Foundation, for helping us make this experience possible!

Let's Talk Learning!
Learning in EDGE will look and sound a bit different. Our goal is for students to learn deeply and transfer learning into new situations and across disciplines. In order to obtain this level of learning, it is important that students have the opportunity to repeatedly practice skills in order to gain independence over time and show understanding of knowledge and skills in multiple ways.

EDGE students will commonly have the opportunity to think and talk about progress on a learning continuum. We'd like to start introducing you to some of the language you're going to use in EDGE!

You'll frequently hear phrases like Beginning, Approaching, Demonstrating, and Transferring. If you think about the process of learning to drive a car, we think you'll easily make connections to each phase of the learning continuum.

Beginning - An indicator of BEGINNING means the student has been introduced to the skill and is learning the foundational concepts. Learning in the beginning stage is often mostly teacher-directed and teacher-supported.

Approaching - An indicator of APPROACHING means the student is practicing the skill and is close to showing independent application but may still make errors or have misconceptions. The student still requires teacher instruction and scaffolding in order to execute the skill.

Demonstrating - An indicator of DEMONSTRATING means the student is showing command of the skill and is able to execute the skill independently and with little error.

Transferring - An indicator of TRANSFERRING means the student is showing command of the skill and is able to execute the skill independently in new scenarios.

Reflection: What's a skill you are currently learning and where would you describe your current learning along the continuum? What would it look like to get to the next level? How do you think it will impact you as a learner to work through this progression?
