Scouting for Food

Many thanks to Scout Troop 150 for their work on November 12 to pick up food donations from our front porches and deliver to the ACCA Food Pantry. Thank you to all of you who remembered to leave your nonperishable food out for the Scouts.

Volunteers Needed

Our critical needs right now are for food captains, money captains, and for drivers transporting groceries and seniors. We also need a development chair and grant writer! Please share these needs with your family, friends, and neighbors!  Please contact us and we'll give you the details.

Food Captains - ACCA is looking for food captains to coordinate emergency requests for food with drivers who deliver groceries to needy clients within its service area.

Food captains receive requests from County and Inova social workers and then schedule drivers to deliver food to homes, coordinating with the food pantry. Tasks can be done from home but require use of a computer. Training is provided. Food captains are asked to work one week per quarter.

Food Delivery Drivers - ACCA is looking for food delivery drivers to deliver food to needy clients within the Annandale/Bailey's Crossroads area. There is no fixed commitment. Drivers can work weekly or every few weeks or less as it fits their schedules each week. Deliveries are between 1:30 and about 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. Drivers receive food referrals from the food captain, contact the client to ensure they will be home, pick up pre-packed food at the pantry, and drive to the client’s residence. The time involved is usually less than an hour.

Be a Money Captain! This role works with social workers to help needy neighbors pay for housing and other essentials. They arrange for payment of rent, utilities, prescriptions and other needs in accordance with ACCA guidelines. Time commitment for this remote role is one week per quarter. Training is provided, background check required. During that week, up to 8 hours work may be required during normal business hours for email and phone calls. Attendance at an annual meeting is required.

Drivers - We partner with the Shepherd Center of Annandale/Springfield to provide critical transportation. We urgently need volunteer drivers who drive local seniors in Annandale, Springfield, and sections of Alexandria to medical appointments during the week and grocery shopping on weekends. Even if you have a limited amount of time to volunteer, this is a wonderful way to touch the lives of people who desperately need this service. You determine when, where, and how often you drive. Email: shepherdscas@vacoxmail.com

Development Chair - we seek a volunteer to serve as the interface between the Development Committee and the board. This person would take a leadership role in cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation of fundraising activities and bring recommendations to the Board of policies and strategies formed by the committee. In addition, this individual would provide guidance on current and new fundraising opportunities as well as tracking the ROI on each opportunity and the program as a whole. A background in development is a plus and working with teams is necessary. An added trait, but also not a requirement, would be a person who enjoys building relationships to help us develop connections with potential funders. There is no set time commitment for the role and some periods will be busier than others. All volunteers work remotely; we communicate mostly through email and the team would speak via conference call once or twice a month.

Grant Writer - ACCA seeks a volunteer to help research potential grant opportunities and write and submit applications. We're looking for someone who can identify new grant opportunities through online research, as well as write and assemble applications. A background specifically in grant writing isn't required, though experience with writing, research, and working with teams is necessary. There is no set time commitment for the role. All volunteers work remotely; we communicate mostly through email and the team speaks by phone for about 1-2 hours every month.
