From the President

Happy Fall 2022 and welcome to the second half of the CFA show season!

In October, CFA revealed a new logo which is part of a large re-branding project. The logo has a clean and current look, and it is very versatile. The logo has been well-received. The flexibility of the logo will serve CFA well, in the years to come and is just a part of a larger initiative. Stay tuned as there is more to come.

I would like to wish everyone in the fancy a Happy Thanksgiving …… but wait! At this time of year, there are many days of celebration around the world!

Japan celebrates 7-5-3 Day on November 15th. This holiday is also known as Shichi-go-san and is a Japanese festival celebrated for children.

In November there are celebrations of All Saint’s Day in many countries including Belgium and Finland. In Finland, Independence Day is December 6 which marks Finland’s independence from the Russian Empire. Also in November India recognizes Guru Nanak Jayanti which is a day that celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak.

Between December 21st and December 23rd, China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam celebrate the Dongzhi Festival which is a Winter Solstice tradition.

And in the United States, November 11 is Veterans Day and Thanksgiving Day is on November 24th.

Thanksgiving has long existed in many cultures, celebrating the planting and harvest seasons. It is an ancient holiday to express gratitude for a plentiful harvest.

At this time, let us take time to be grateful for all our loved ones and our plentiful harvest.

Until next time,

Rich

CFA International Cat Show and Expo

Mark Hannon, Chair

CFA International Cat Show Committee

After the cancellation of the show for 2020, 2021, and 2022 due to Covid, we are pleased to announce that the show is scheduled for October 14-15, 2023 at the I-X Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Show Managers are Linda Murphy & Noralyn Heisig and the committee chairs are Ed Raymond & Mark Hannon. We will once again have two shows (Teal and Purple) with eight rings in each. There will be five Allbreed rings and three Specialty rings in each show. We will also have two rings limited to Opens, Champions with Top Ten finals and there will also be Top Ten for Opens, Premiers. For these two rings we will combine the cats from the Teal and Purple shows.

Selection of the judges will be by vote of the clubs. Ballots will be distributed in early December and the judges with the most votes will be announced at the February board meeting. Judges that place 17th and 18th will be invited to judge the two rings limited to Opens, Champions, and Premiers.

As has become a tradition, Breed Councils will be encouraged to have Breed Booths to help educate spectators to our many unique breeds. Let’s get working on them. CFA’s Marketing Director, Desiree Bobby, is already at work lining up extras to entertain our visitors and make this an event to remember. This is why we have added “& Expo” to the show’s name.

Plan ahead and be sure to join us!

NOTE: The graphic included is not an official show logo. It was created just to accompany this article.

Judges' Association

What happens when your cat is in class judging but your cat is also called to a final in a different ring? This happens to everyone at some point and can be stressful. Where do I go?

Show rule 11.16 helps decide what to do. Class judging takes priority over finals except in cases of an emergency.

Communication is the key. Let the ring clerk of the ring your cat is in know you have been called to another ring AND let the ring clerk who called the final know. The ring clerks can work together to facilitate the most efficient way to keep the rings moving and still get finals done. Maybe if the judge still has a few cats to judge before the one needed, the cat can be released to get the placement then promptly return. Maybe the judge doing the final can work around the missing cat until the judging is complete.

The opposite problem can also happen, meaning your cat is in a final but is called for judging in another ring. Again, communication is important. Quietly, let both ring clerks know the situation. Maybe the judge can award the cats out of order so those needing to be judged can leave early.

The smaller the entry for the show the more common ring conflicts are. If after working with the ring clerks the issue is not resolved you can go to the show manager to assist. With some patience and open communication any conflicts can be overcome.

CFA Yearbook

Mark Hannon, Chair

Publications Committee

The Yearbook is going to the printer this week which is about a month earlier than normal. We expect to mail them to advertisers and buyers the first week of January. That is welcome news and we want to thank our editor, Shelly Borawski, for making this possible.

The book has more than 300 pages and by popular demand we are returning to a hard cover. Mary K has taken over the statistical look at last show season which for decades had been authored by Monte Phillips. Iris Zink has written an article on the Louisville KY Annual Meeting last June and Iris also coordinated an article on the significant breed accomplishments last season. I wrote an historical article on the CFA International Cat Show … which is returning in 2023. Of course, there will be photos of our national winning cats, grands, DMs, etc. and ads with fabulous professional photos of our winning cats.

For the first time we will not only print a hard copy but there will also be a digital version!! You can buy either one or both with a special combo price. If you order prior to December 1, 2022 you can save money. If you have not ordered yet go to https://catalog.cfa.org/yearbook.shtml .

Cat Talk

Teresa Keiger. Editor

We're busy wrapping up the December issue of Cat Talk, so expect to see the notice in your mailbox the first part of December! We take a look at cats and the holidays.

February is always our "Breeding" issue, where we look at the many facets of breeding cats. One of our articles this year is "Why Do You Breed?" and we'd love to hear what it is that makes you a breeder. Is it preserving your chosen breed? Do you have a goal that you are pursuing? Perhaps it's the interaction with pet buyers. We want to share your thoughts with our readers. Teresa Keiger is compiling the article, so share your thoughts with her.

Compensatory Damages for Delaware Pets is State Law - for Now

Delaware Governor John Carney signed the Senate Substitute Bill SS1 for SB 258 into law on October 14, 2022. The Izzy the Cat Act authorizes courts to award pet owners compensatory, or financial, damages due to negligent, reckless, or malicious injury or death to a pet. It includes amendments to the original bill removing the cap on compensatory damages and the authorization for emotion-based damages for tortious acts. The amendments also add a sunset provision causing the entire Act to expire 3 years after its enactment unless “otherwise provided by a subsequent act of the General Assembly.”

Lawmakers usually limit emotion-based or non-economic damages for a minimal set of circumstances involving the injury or death of a person. In states that authorize these damages, breeders and pet owners could expect increases in direct costs such as veterinary care, boarding, pet food, and supplies. Indirect costs such as homeowners or automobile insurance would also probably increase. Expanding it to pets would have far-ranging consequences for all pet owners for the benefit of a few.

The "Delaware Considers Emotion-based Damages for Pets this Session" discussed SB 258 in the May 2022 What’s Hot.

Tax Tips with George Eigenhauser

In recent years the Tuesday after Thanksgiving has become known as “Giving Tuesday”. This year Giving Tuesday will be on November 29, 2022. After the more commercial shopping events such as “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday”, it helps refocus attention on good works and charitable giving. While not an official holiday in the U.S. it has grown to become a worldwide event. With the holidays upon us, it is important to remember the spirit of kindness and charity. If your holiday season includes charitable giving, please consider the EveryCat Health Foundation. Founded in 1968, EveryCat is a 501(c)(3) public charity devoted to the welfare of all cats. Over the years EveryCat has funded more than $8 million in health research for the benefit of cats at more than 30 partner institutions worldwide. Your gifts to EveryCat are fully tax-deductible of federal law.

Make your Giving Tuesday gift this year to EveryCat’s Cures4Cats Campaign.

Tiger’s Lair and Lucky Tom Cat Clubs co-hosted their annual show on October 15-16 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, Springfield, Illinois. This long-held show is a favorite of the MWR because of its open, and airy venue with 12’ windows along two sides, allowing for a great deal of natural light.

Always a spectator favorite, the clubs presented a costume contest on both days, judged by club member and exhibitor, Kayla Kosmatka Motto. Winners of the costume parade were selected by the gate. Several visitors remarked, “This is the highlight of my day!” Co-show manager, Sueann Spinder, stated, “We had a wonderfully consistent gate, and exhibitors were always busy, chatting with the crowd.”

Sangamon County Animal Control always plays a huge role in this show: the rescue group brought twenty-three cats. “We had a good adoption turnout, and adopted eleven cats on Saturday. On Sunday, the rescue organization brought four more to add to the twelve left over from the day before,” reported Cindy Willoughby, club member and animal control volunteer. Cindy was excited to announced that fourteen cats were adopted directly from the show hall, and three more are pending, and due to go to their “furever” homes by Monday or Tuesday! Congratulations to the volunteers for all their help in getting these kitties ready for the show and helping show them off to potential owners!

Celebrating a major milestone in club history, the Indy Cat Club hosted their 50th Golden Anniversary Show on October 29th at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds in Danville, Indiana. The 7-ring (5 AB/HHP and 2 SP) show featured CFA’s working long-haired cats, including the Siberian, Norwegian Forest Cat, and Maine Coon Cat. Judge and club member Pam DeGolyer stated, “We had a good entry of 175, which included an HHP class of 31 cats.” Additionally, the club welcome well over 400 guests to their show who thoroughly enjoyed all the varieties of breeds on exhibition. Also in attendance was the Cuddle Me Cat Rescue group run by club member Donna Zimmerman. The club offered $1 off gate entry if cat food was brought to the show, with all food donations going to the Cuddle Me Cat Rescue.

Exhibitors were treated to a fabulous barbeque lunch provided by a local popular food truck. Exhibitors also participated in a blind contest for a prize: only one show rosette held the winning “stamp”: the winner was the owner of the Best Kitten, Tina Patrone, who was showing a beautiful British Shorthair kitten.

The air was filled with excitement and great anticipation in the Gas South Convention Center on November 5 as the exhibitors arrived and began to set up their benching. Club President, Cyndi Lewis opened the 84th Annual Cotton States show at 10am, and the fun began! While the Gas South Convention Center has been home to the Cotton States show for many years, this time attendees found a different venue; the space had been greatly enlarged and improved.

Appreciative comments were heard regarding the wide spaces in the benching areas with more room to walk between the rows. The extra room was welcome, as this show was the largest since the pandemic began: 324 entries. This year’s show was dedicated to the late Joanne Hardeman, show manager extraordinaire for 11 previous years and highlighted her favorite things in each of the 8 rings.

On 22nd October 2022, Malaysia Cat Fanciers Club licensed and organized the MCFC SUBANG PARADE CFA INTERNATIONAL CAT SHOW in Subang Parade, a shopping mall located in Subang Jaya, an upscale urban neighborhood in Selangor, Malaysia. We were honored to fly in six (6) Allbreed judges, namely Russell Webb and Darrell Newkirk from the USA; Irina Kharchenko and Nadejda Rumyantseva from the Russian Federation; together with Toshi and Mihoko Tsuchiya from the land of rising sun, Japan.

This show was participated by 140 gorgeous felines representing 14 distinctive shorthair breeds and 13 Longhair breeds/divisions. We hosted a congregation of exhibitors from all over Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. It also marks the successful collaboration between the clubs and organisers of five (5) consequent shows in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Malaysia Cat Fanciers Club also took the opportunity to create awareness on CFA and its Cat Shows through setting up of CFA awareness buntings to explain different competitive classes of judging; meaning of ribbons and awards; breed awareness; and an introduction to Household Pet competition. Additionally, the club distributed CFA coloring books to excited children and distributed show guide pamphlets to curious visitors.

It was a fun day for fellow exhibitors and visitors alike. The judges were stimulating and charming to the crowds, the rosettes were beautiful, while the felines were gorgeous and highly competitive. In the end, we truly believe that our friends and felines had a fabulous fair where the finest felines finaled.
