10:00 AM Holy Eucharist at St. Stephen's

Dear friends,
August 14th is the Feast Day of Jonathan Myrick Daniels. He was a strong and vocal advocate for racial justice. On Aug 14th, 1965 he moved in front of Ruby Sales, acting as a shield to protect her from being shot. He died that day and Ruby lived to tell the truth about what happened that day.

The article below, from Episcopal News Service, is informative and inspiring. There are a couple of links to videos that tell his story and include live footage.
I hope you will take the time to read and listen to them!
|
|
On another note, I will be headed out to NYC next week so will not be including a letter with the newsletter. Thanks to Evan, you WILL still get a newsletter with links to the service bulletin, service, and other important news!
Blessings and peace,
Karen+

Volunteers Needed!
Santa Maria needs pantry volunteers to box groceries between 9:00am and 11:30am on weekdays. It’s a gratifying way to make a big difference in the lives of others. Call Santa Maria Urban Ministry at 408-292-3314. You must be at least twelve years old to volunteer.
|
|
Help Kids Get Back To School
Every year Santa Maria supports children and families with a back to school program. This program provides much needed funds for school supplies, clothing and shoes for students.
Santa Maria has found that gift cards provide the most effective and empowering way to help their clients. With gift cards to Target, children can shop for their own new shoes and clothing while parents can get only the school supplies their children need.
The gift card program replaces Santa Maria’s backpack distribution because plenty of backpacks are available to children from other organizations.

St. John’s has a black spinet piano that is being replaced and is looking for a good home. It’s a great piano in great condition. If you, or someone you know of, would like to own it, please contact Ginny at 51996ma@gmail.com

Tomorrow we will
be planting corn
seedlings that Kat and Bear
have grown from seedhood
in their backyard in
downtown San José,
rising green and proud
between the squash and
peppers, caged for their
own safety against
ground squirrels. It’s late
to plant but I think
they will do well here,
thrive in the sunshine.

NEEDING PRAYER SUPPORT?
Prayer is one of those things we often think about, might feel inadequate about, believe in but might be unsure how to proceed. How we pray is sometimes unique to each of us. The Church provides help in many ways. If you find yourself in need, of any kind (emotional, physical, spiritual, guidance, etc) consider how St. Stephen's can support you:
* there is a prayer chain of committed pray-ers (who maintain confidentiality).
* tell people about your answers to prayer! and the miracles you witness, or how prayer changes YOU.
Please submit prayer requests to Rev. Karen.
