Still healing after the Caldor Fire
|
|
One year ago, the Caldor Fire was marching toward Lake Tahoe. When all was said and done, 10,000 acres within the Basin were burnt. Even before the flames reached us, the League knew there would be years of needed ecosystem restoration work ahead.
On August 10 of this year, a team of 22 volunteers, US Forest Service staff and League team members got down to the long project of healing Tahoe's burn scars. In a single morning, this passionate group decommissioned 1,125 feet of scorched trail, including the removal of damaged and dangerous steel-reinforced steps. They also created 350 feet of new trail. Check out these photos of the team at work.
There's plenty more work to do. We invite you to join us for an upcoming hands-on restoration event on Saturday, September 24. Help us heal Tahoe.

Earlier today (Wednesday, August 24), the League proudly received TRPA's Best in the Basin award for our work to prevent new infestations of aquatic invasive species.
As part of our Eyes on the Lake program, we train marina staff around the Lake to identify and report possible aquatic invasive species sightings, so new infestations can be stopped before they start. In August of 2021, this Early Detection Rapid Response protocol was activated by the diligent staff at Homewood High & Dry Marina. Working together with Homewood, the Tahoe Resource Conservation District and divers from Marine Taxonomic Services, a new invasive weed population was nipped in the bud before it could take hold.
In 2022, we've improved and expanded the EDRR protocol so Tahoe's invasive species-fighting dragnet is even broader.
