FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MBE PUBLIC POLICY DAY | March 15, 2023 | Capital Auditorium

Austin – A coalition of minority business organizations across Texas join efforts to host MBE Public Policy Day at the Texas capital. Minority business enterprises (MBEs) from Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Southwest Texas and across the entire state will meet in Austin, TX on March 15th to inform and educate Texas lawmakers on the impact minority-owned businesses make on our state’s economy.

These groups will be addressing the issues within their A.C.E. (accountability, collaboration, and engagement) public policy framework. These historically underutilized businesses will remind legislators of the need to create accountability for an inclusive sourcing process across the state; increase collaboration between minority business organizations to develop solutions that increase business across the state; and engage minority-owned businesses in policy development to ensure that big and small businesses in Texas thrive, build capacity, and increase the competitive prowess of our state.

Corporations, certified minority business enterprises (MBEs), and historically underutilized businesses (HUBs) of the 3 regional Councils in partnership with the Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce (TAMACC) will meet with their elected representatives to share their positions on legislation that impacts business in our state and increases opportunities for everyone to build wealth and experience prosperity in Texas.

Minority business owners and those that support and advocate on their behalf will promote legislation that promotes the A.C.E. principal to increase accountability for HUB inclusion and meeting HUB participation goals at state agencies, commissions, colleges, and universities. Elevating the HUB coordinator position in these entities to promote collaboration between those responsible for policy making, ensuring inclusion, and buying on behalf of our state. Through intentional engagement with minority business development organizations, our state will elevate our pro-business culture making Texas one of the most diverse states in our nation and the best place to start a minority-owned business.  This will be memorialized with a signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the regional councils who certify HUBs on behalf of the State of Texas and the Deputy Comptroller of Public Accounts, Lisa Craven.

Today more than ever, we recognize that economic inequities exist between minority and non-minority communities. Over the past 50 years, the number of minority business enterprises (MBEs) have increased in number nation-wide, but only 2.6% generate revenue over $1M as of 2018. This equates to just over a 1% increase over a 51-year period. At this pace, it will take 333 years to close the economic parity gap. This coalition of business organizations represent 868 certified minority business enterprises (MBEs) who fuel our state’s economy with more than $17 billion in revenues and have created or preservation of more than 82,000 jobs. As a result of the economic stimulus of our minority-owned businesses, over $4.7 billion in wages have been earned by Texans.
