Service Will Be In-Person in the Amphitheatre and Streamed Online
"The Courage Within Us"
Rev. Jo Green
Worship Associate: Chris Byrnes

My position here with this congregation is to help us all reach into our inner selves and discover what holds us, what revives us, how do we live our lives spiritually, ethically, kindly. Doesn’t this require courage? This Sunday let us explore the inner workings of our ethics and morals in relation to the courage we perform. Let us find those inner courage muscles and learn how to exercise them.

Service Will Be In-Person in the Amphitheatre and Streamed Online
"Our Own Profiles in Courage"
Rev. Jo Green

With a connection to the theme the Sacred Circles used this month, this Sunday let us explore what the profiles of courage within ourselves appears to be. When have you been courageous? How have you helped someone else be courageous? Can we learn to be courageous? We can examine these concepts and begin to create our own profile in courage.
A Reminder About Scheduling
Your UUFSD Administrator works hard to keep our Events Calendar correct, up to date, and equitable for all.

Should you need a day on the calendar for ANY event, please contact the Administrator FIRST before assuming a date is available.

Even if it looks like the date is free on the calendar, there are some private events that may not show to the public so please always speak to Tracey at office@uufsd.org before scheduling a date for your event.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Good News!
Re-Opening for Outdoor Services on January 23, 2022

We are re-opening for outdoor services in person on Sunday, January 23rd.

We know that being in person is a very important aspect of our fellowship, and we are ready to re-open safely in our amphitheater, with a few conditions required because of the Delta/Omicron variant.

1. Everyone 5 years or older who comes on-site must show proof of full vaccination for COVID-19.
2. Masks are required for everyone over 2 years of age. Masks must be made of paper or cloth and cover your nose and mouth and fit snugly on your face at all times.
3. Please maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet between members of different households.
4. For now, no food or beverage will be served for coffee hour. We encourage you to stay and socialize after service with masks and social distancing protocols in mind.
5. Religious Education Classes will also be held outdoors with masks. Parents please note that children must be registered prior to attending an RE program and snacks will not be allowed at this time.

The intent is for services to be outdoors as much as possible, so please dress accordingly. In the case of rain or inclement weather, only those involved in the service will be in Founder’s Hall. For everyone else, services would be virtual, and the congregation will be notified by email and/or text at least one hour before the start of service with a link to join the service from the comfort of home.

Interfaith Overnight Shelter Update

UUFSD was just notified Tuesday, January 11th that the Interfaith Overnight Shelter is cancelling its plan to return to housing individuals in religious facilities this year. Concerns about Covid during the present surge prompted them to seek alternative ways to house unsheltered individuals. They will keep us informed about ways we can support them as their plans evolve. Thanks to everyone who already volunteered to bring food, serve food, and/or spend the night!

Here's to being back in the usual practices next year!

Monthly Call To Action – January

Over the last several years a number of states have passed the most draconian abortion limitations in recent history. In September, the US House of Representatives passed the Women’s Health Protection Act, (HR 3755) which creates new legal protections for both providers and patients of abortion care at the federal level. The legislation is now in the US Senate. Affirm the inherent worth and dignity of every person by lifting your voice in support of reproductive justice. Call your US Senators with the following sample script or one of your own: “Hi. My name is [NAME] and I am a constituent from [CITY, ZIP CODE]. I’m calling to urge Senator [NAME] to support HR 3755, the Women’s Health Protection Act. Pregnant people deserve the right to bodily autonomy. Thank you.” Senator Alex Padilla (202)224-3553/(619)239-3884; Senator Dianne Feinstein (202)224-3841/(619)231-9712.
Campus Improvements
Dream Builders Update

A contract has been executed to replace the main stairway. Work is scheduled to begin January 25th and is expected to take 3 weeks to complete. Project status will be in the newsletter each week keeping everyone informed of any schedule changes due to weather, etc. During construction access to the site will be via the pathway from the upper parking lot and the pathway from the west end of the parking lot.

The Core Building (kitchen) exterior is requiring more extensive repair than originally planned. In an effort to make repairs quickly the Sandy Hill office will be temporarily moved to the Library. This move will take place in the next 2 weeks and last until the end of March. Founders Hall is available for any onsite activities requiring meeting space. The new partition in the hall can be use to create 2 meeting spaces if needed. Please coordinate any on site meetings with Tracey at office@uufsd.org.

Your patience is appreciated during these much-needed site improvements.

Any questions concerning current projects contact Chris Faller at cfaller5@gmail.com
Dear B&Grs,

Chris Faller and Ed Mlakar were at the site on Tuesday, January 11th.

Ed applied a coat of polyurethane to the worship table in the Amphitheater and a coat of paint to the Amphitheater south fence.

There are quite a few tasks that need to be performed to prepare for the Kitchen building stucco job:

·        Dismantle additional conduits and lighting on the facia boards – Done by Chris and Ed
·        Repair extensive exterior siding damage
·        Re-slope the dirt around the kitchen building and some of the brick pavers
·        Replace rotten 2x4 studs around the Sandy Hill office door
·        Replace the Sandy Hill windows with new vinyl windows – On Order
·        The YRUU building needs to have the bushes on the southside trimmed
·        Remove the Brazilian pepper tree sprouts on the main staircase
·        Stain the cedar posts on the main staircase handrails

REMINDER: We are planning to have a work party on January 22nd at 9:00am. Please let Ed know if you are available to attend. Mark your calendar.

Thanks,

Ed Mlakar

Institute of Contemporary Art Tour
THIS Saturday, January 22, at 11:00am

UUFSD members and their guests have been invited by the Institute of Contemporary Art to a tour and discussion, on Saturday, January 22, 11am. ICA San Diego North is located at 1550 El Camino Real, Encinitas. The artist, Marina Zurkow’s immersive installation, Boil the Ocean, represents humankind’s unbalanced relationship with the ocean. The exhibition signals the severe ecological threat marine ecosystems face while the title is also an idiom that refers to a futile task.

Zurkow’s installation breaks down the supplier-consumer-dominated exchange with the ocean by inviting the audience to consider a more “wet logic” — an approach that all things are in a state of continuous change and flux.

Masks are required indoors. Interested children over the age of 10 are welcome. Please RSVP to Linda Charles at drlindacharles@gmail.com or call 858-603-8964.
