Ask Carmen
What camera should you use for travel vlogging?
Q: I'd like to become a travel creator, but I'm not sure what kind of camera I should buy. What do you recommend?

A: Believe it or not, having an expensive camera is not a requirement to become a travel creator. When it comes to creating photo and video content, technique matters a lot more than gear.

A good photographer or videographer can produce beautiful images even with a cheap camera. And if you hand an expensive camera to someone who's not good at photography or videography, they're not going to be able to create good content.

So instead of rushing out to buy an expensive new camera, take stock of what you already own. Do you have a basic point-and-shoot camera already? Do you have a smartphone with a decent camera? Most likely, you already own some gear that will work just fine.

Take the time to get as good as you can using the gear you already own. We've got some simple tutorial videos on our YouTube channels that are great for beginner creators, such as how to take better vacation photos, how to take better iPhone photos, and how to get great photos of your kids, even when they don't feel like smiling for the camera.

Once you've mastered some basics of composition and simple editing, only then should you consider going out to buy new gear. We've got a video about the top 5 cameras for travel vlogging, which breaks down the pros and cons of each. Happy shooting!
