A note from the president
Friends,

This week's event schedule is truly chockablock with fun. We've highlighted several below but I would be remiss to not call out the fact that Twin Cities Jazz Fest returns in-person to downtown this weekend. Two of my favorite musicians, Emmet Cohen and Delfeayo Marsalis are headlining in Mears Park tonight and tomorrow night respectively, and dozens of other artists will be performing throughout Lowertown. The full schedule can be found here.

Twin Cities Startup Week is also kicking off its in-person return today and running through next Friday. Like so many other conferences, Startup Week went virtual last year, but we're thrilled to see sessions taking place across downtown Saint Paul, from Osborn370 to Wellworth. I'd encourage everyone to check out what they've got planned, you don't need to be a tech entrepreneur to find something relevant to your work.

Please take a moment to fill out a brief survey about the first year of our Downtown Improvement District programming. Whether you're already back in the office or still working from home the SPDID would like to hear from you! Your feedback is critical as we plan for the future and reflect on our progress so far. The survey should take no more than 5 minutes and you'll have the option to enter a drawing for a $50 gift card as a thank you for your time.

Keep reading for lots more news from downtown, including a great story WCCO did on downtown, and a round up of other upcoming events.

Enjoy the weekend,

Joe Spencer
President

News from around downtown

"This summer’s crime rate in downtown Saint Paul was the lowest in at least five years. “We were 23% below last year’s crime rates and we’re 10% below the five-year average,” said Joe Spencer, the president of the Saint Paul Downtown Alliance. The alliance looked at overall crime statistics during the months of June, July and August dating back to 2017."

"The designation, which improved from No. 26 a year ago, comes as Saint Paul officials and civic boosters have launched initiatives to enhance safety and cleanliness, increase downtown apartment options and help homeless people find supportive housing."

"With multiple local bus routes poised to move onto Minnesota and Cedar streets, and then later onto Robert Street, Metro Transit has launched an online survey asking riders whether to keep them on Robert indefinitely or eventually move them back."

"The air at Friday night's opening concert of the SPCO's 2021-22 season hummed with excitement, and, despite performing before an indoor audience for the first time in 18 months, the orchestra showed no signs of rust."

"Concerts take place the third Friday of each month through December in the Landmark Center’s F.K. Weyerhaeuser Auditorium in downtown Saint Paul. Performances begin at 8 p.m. and are preceded by a cocktail hour with a cash bar. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door or $70 for a full-season package."

"Dance powerhouse Maia Maiden has been instrumental in bringing street-style dancing and movement rooted in African culture to the mainstream, wowing Twin Cities audiences with popular showcases such as "Rooted: A Hip-Hop Choreographer's Evening."

Now, Maiden is stepping into a new role as director of arts learning and community engagement at the Ordway Center for the Arts."

"Saint Paul and Minneapolis are testing the waters of the bike-sharing market to see if they can attract a bike and scooter vendor for both cities. The Saint Paul City Council recently approved the prospect of issuing a joint request for proposals to that effect, with the goal of potentially rolling out shared services sometime next year."
