The world lost a great man, soldier, and hero this past Sunday. Brigadier General & WWII Tuskegee Airman Charles McGee was 102 and passed away at his home in Bethesda, MD. He flew 409 combat missions spanning three wars: WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam war. THE GREEN BOX author Jim Kurtz had the honor of meeting him by chance in the New Orleans Airport in 2016. They instantly bonded and became friends. Jim gave him a copy of his book and asked him to check his flight logs for 8/3/44, the day Jim's father was shot down, returning from a bombing mission. The following morning Charles McGee called Jim to say he indeed had flown fighter support that day for B24 '"Sugar Baby" (Jim's dad's plane). Our film crew was honored to interview him for our documentary, and we are so sorry to learn of his passing. A decorated airman who retired in 1973 after achieving the rank of Colonel, McGee was honorarily promoted to Brigadier General in 2020.
We salute you Gen. McGee, and may you rest in peace.
