Beguiling Bridges
by Elliott Ruga

I’m sure I’m not alone in my fascination for bridges. But what accounts for their allure which extends beyond their well-engineered facilitation of travel across inhospitable features of the landscape? As a child I had a recurring nightmare so profoundly unsettling that I still remember it clearly. My family is driving to the shore, traveling south on the Garden State Parkway and climbing up the Driscoll Bridge, where the Raritan River widens to meet Raritan Bay. The almost mile-long bridge is a busy affair, with fifteen lanes of traffic; twenty-one if you count the adjacent lanes of the Route 9 bridge. The Driscoll has a steep arch, so that you cannot see the far side of the bridge while climbing to the crest. In my dream, the bridge does not collapse; it simply fails to deliver me to the expected other shore. Instead, it launches me into a chaos of sky, river, cars, trucks and busses. I am not falling towards the water, I am floating in the air and submerged in the water at the same time. I am engulfed in a sheer confusion of matter; unmoored, lost, and adrift. With nothing to hold on to, I awaken whimpering with mortifying terror.

For those that do not know Elliott Ruga is Policy and Communications Director for the New Jersey Highlands Coalition, which represents a diverse network of local, regional, statewide and national organizations to represent their common goal to protect, enhance and restore the New Jersey Highlands. Elliott is the recipient of two Emmy Awards for technical achievement for his work on NBC’s broadcasts of the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona and the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

Elliott is one of the driving forces behind NNJR-SCCA's annual Tour of the Highlands Car Rally.

Tire Rack Solo Nationals!
September 06, 2021 to September 10, 2021
Registration window is about to open for the 2021 Tire Rack Solo Nationals. If you missed the announcement about the registration process, you can review that information here.
Solo Nationals Contingency Programs
It’s a well-accepted fact in SCCA’s Solo community that the more stickers and decals a car has, the faster it is. Whether that is scientifically true or not, decals and stickers sure make a car look faster, and cooler.

But more importantly, the right stickers in the right places can earn Tire Rack Solo Nationals participants free stuff thanks to contingency sponsors.
