"Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green: and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit."

Jeremiah 17:7-8 KJV

HOPE FOR THE REMNANT

Jeremiah was a prophet called by God to bring a warning to Judah about judgment that was coming. He was told by God in Jeremiah 1:7 to not be afraid because the Lord would be with him. In 1:19 he was warned that the people would fight against him.

In 1:10 he was told that his assignment was, “See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.”  Doesn’t sound like a call most of us would like, does it? Despite the hardship that came with his call, Jeremiah was faithful.

God uses prophets like Jeremiah today also. They are sent to warn the church that they must get their “house in order” because judgment starts at the house of the Lord.

In Jeremiah 17 Jeremiah tells Judah that they will be taken captive and serve their enemies in a land they had never been. Judah was trusting in its own self and pagan gods. It no longer was relying upon the God of their fathers. They had forsaken him.

Yet in Jeremiah 17:7-8 God gives a message of hope to those that would be taken captive but were serving God. It reads, “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. 8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see [fear] when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful [worried] in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.” Wow! Provision in captivity. Fruitfulness in captivity. God is faithful to those that trust him!

In the midst of their captivity God lets them know that he will take care of those that trust him. What a tremendous promise for them, and for us. Despite Judah’s sin, God had a plan for the remnant. Despite the sin of our nation, God has provision for those that trust him. He will take care of his remnant!

Thank you for being with us today.
