Today's Power Pantry

The kitchen was Command Central during the pandemic, and the pantry the power hub.

While a key role in the house was line cook or top chef, it was only made possible with great supply chain management. As quarantine lingered on, the pantry evolved from a place to store simple basics to a place to fuel and explore. We reached for small jars of flavor adventures to add topspin to everyday meals. And we started experimenting with plant based versions of classic staples.

There's been a shift that goes way beyond white flour to almond flour: now home cooks can store shelf stable microwaveable cauliflower cups and chickpea pasta. Condiments, dressings and marinades increased +25%* and seasonings +32%* in 2020/21 as cooks looked for creative ways to cook with foodie accessories. With passports dusty, consumers escaped to exotic flavors, exploring new territories like the Philippines, Uruguay, Bolivia, Tunisia, Guatemala and South Africa for foods with international flair (+21%). And global favorites like Cajun/Creole, Japanese and Thai also grew in popularity.
