Early August, 2021: Lakes and Forests

Boating on Pickerel Lake.

COVID has reeked havoc on our family. No, no one has gotten COVID. We all masked up and then we all got jabbed up, allowing us to successfully dodge the little beasts. The COVID problem, however, has split our family in a physical way, that is, the German contingent and the US contingent just can’t physically get together.

Prior to COVID, my sister, Diane, and her husband, Heinrich, visited northern Wisconsin every summer. They have a place in a beautifully wooded subdivision near St. Germain. My other sister, Donna, from Green Bay, and all of her brood also have a place near St. Germain. Wanda and I, being the Stevens Point contingent, were only two hours away from St. Germain. So, the German, Green Bay, and Stevens Point groups hung out together each summer for a three-month jamboree.

Wanda and I would also often visit Germany, where Diane and Heinrich’s daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren reside. COVID, of course, with all the travel bans in place, put the kibosh on all of that family interaction. The travel bans between Europe and the US remains in affect.

This begs the question, what about Diane’s place in St. Germain? Empty, unused houses can deteriorate without use and maintenance. Well, Wanda and I volunteered to provide those house-sitting duties. The old adage, “it’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it”, applies here. That is how we found ourselves basing our exploration operations out of St. Germain.

All of our “ing’ing” including boating, ebiking, hiking, UTVing, QT touring, waterfall spotting, motor biking, swimming, etc. center around St. Germain this summer. So, on a weekly basis, sort of, we will be posting our activities. We try, weather permitting, to do at least one activity a day. Northern Wisconsin is a near endless playground that we are determined to take advantage of.

Our small portable pontoon boat. It is easy to launch in different lakes.

Boating Pickerel Lake.

We love boating on lakes that are linked to other lakes via channels. These channels are our favorite waterways.

UTVing a narrow trail on the way to St. Germain.

Boating the three-lake chain of lakes: Rock Lake, North Turtle Lake, and South Turtle Lake.

We were able to squeak under this bridge between North and South Turtle Lakes.

UTVing with Donna and Wanda on the gravel back roads and narrow lanes.

Glossary of terms used for newcomers: 1) V-Jer. The name of our camper. 2) Saturn. The name of our Van. 3) Duende. Our mischievous gremlin that breaks things. 4) Tata. The good gremlin that helps us fix Duende’s dirty work. 5) The Black Hole. This is what we call Walmart because every time we go in for just a couple of items, we come out spending way more than we figured. 6) QT. Quaint Town. 7) Little Buddy. This is what we call our Dyson cordless stick vacuum.
