Sunday Worship:
In Person and
Streaming
at 9:00 and 11:15 am
This Week at Pender
June 30, 2022
By following Jesus
and reaching out to others,
we seek God's transformation
of ourselves and our world.
Greetings!
July 3, 2022
On Sunday, July 3, 2022, Pender Lead Pastor Will White will preach on "Wash and Be Clean" based on Luke 10:1-11 and Luke 10:16-20.

Our text is about obedience and about submitting to authority, but it is also about recognizing the voice of God in the voices of others. Naaman had little reason to listen to Elisha, except that he listened to the voice of the refugee girl whom he made a servant in his house. What does it take to hear the voice of God? To whom do we listen?

Wash and Be Clean is from the new sermon series titled Prophet Margins.

Holy Communion will be celebrated.

We look forward to seeing you!

Masks are optional.

Join us live at Pender UMC
The Traditional Services are in person and live streamed at 9:00 am on Sunday.
The Common Ground Contemporary Services are in person and live streamed at 11:15 am on Sunday.
All Pender Meetings, Classes and Events on the Church Calendar for the 2021-2022 school year expired at the end of June 2022.

If you are the leader of a meeting, Sunday School Teacher or event leader, please add your events for the 2022/2023 school year to the Event Calendar.

This applies to events at Pender, Zoom Meetings, groups at people's homes, enjoying a meal at a restaurant. All Pender events must be accounted for as they are reported to the District Office.

Pender Members can add your own events to the calendar through MyPenderPage

You will get an email when your event is approved. Note that you cannot add an event to a room that is already reserved for another meeting.

If you need a paper form, you can download it here.
Prayer Requests
"Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances for this is God's will for you in Jesus Christ. " 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Pender is a church committed to the power of prayer. Our "prayer chain" is a group of church members constantly in prayer for the needs of our congregation. To make your prayer needs known, you may email the prayer chain by clicking here to send an email to our group of prayer warriors.
From the SPPRC:

Thank You to VBS Ministry Team

You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. (Deuteronomy 6:7)

Staff/Pastor-Parish Relations Committee would like to extend a big note of thanks and appreciation to the entire Vacation Bible School (VBS) Ministry team that included our Pender United Methodist Church staff, volunteers, and members from the broader Pender community. We were blessed with 53 children from our community who participated in VBS from June 20-24th. Families expressed notes of thanks and appreciation that they loved every part of VBS; each day was a day of fun; they learned so much about God's creation; and our children were loved and accepted fully and completely -- thank you!

Also from the SPPRC:

As Christians, we are to be considered followers of Jesus. Following requires a sort of faithfulness, the placement of trust in another outside of yourself. Those who have endured the heartache of broken trust know that following is not so passive. But there can be powerful agency in choosing who we follow...who we allow to lead our lives and our future.

John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, understood this quite well. He didn't set out to lead a movement. He didn't set out to create a whole denomination. He was concerned that the Church he loved was not following through with the commitment to love all neighbors, especially the poor. How could one say that they followed Christ while denying marginalized individuals the opportunity to hear the word of God? How could one refuse the ability to commune with other believers solely because of economic status? Through his methodical way of studying God's word, engaging with God, and building accountability groups, he was empowered to follow the nudges from the Holy Spirit: to go where the needy were, meeting them where they were instead of beckoning to come to the lavish buildings that shunned or dismissed them.

Wesley remained faithful to his call from God, enabling him to grow deeper as a follower. And you know the funny thing? People started following him. He became a leader, an influencer, by following the ultimate influencer, [Jesus Christ].Klein, Shandon. “Following in Faithfulness.” The United Methodist Church, Rethink Church, UMC.ORG, 2 May 2022, https://www.umc.org/en/content/following-in-faithfulness.
Getting to Know Our Neighbors – On Sunday, July 17th, there will be one joint worship service at 11:15am, followed by a luncheon in the Gathering Place. Cynthia Lopynski, Program Coordinator from the Arlington District, will share current information regarding Pender UMC’s mission field.

Also:
United Methodists Stand Against Racism – On Sunday, August 7th, at 4pm, in the Gathering Place, the Rev. Deborah Porras will lead an intense Bible study on the important social issue of racism. After the study, informal discussions will continue over ice-cream.

and
Reaching New People – This is proven, current, methodology for “making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world” UMC BOD, 2016, ¶ 120, It utilizes local church strengths and people to “project the church’s presence” into the community.

The Rev. Melissa Dunlap has agreed to be our consultant. She is coming on Sunday, September 18, from 3-5pm, to lead an introductory workshop. Everyone is welcome with the goal that there will be a Reaching New People team, made up of both volunteer and recruited members, that will meet monthly with our consultant over a twelve-month period.
Lectio Divina, or “divine reading” is a traditional Christian practice that helps you dive deeply into a passage of scripture and see how God speaks to you.

The group reads a Bible passage, reflects on the passage, responds to what God’s word is saying to us and rests to meditate on the Bible passage. The group is meeting by Zoom on Thursdays from 1:30 to 2:30.

Please contact Carol-Anne Kaye or Iris Salcewicz for Zoom information.
United Women in Faith - All ladies are invited to come for dinner at Silver Diner on July 11 at 5:30 PM. The address is 12251 Fair Lakes Parkway, Fairfax. It’s at the corner of West Ox Road and Fair Lakes Parkway.

Hopefully we’ll be able to eat outside. They have a very nice tented area for outside dining. The menu can be found at silverdiner.com/fairoaks.

We hope many of you can come for a good dinner and fellowship with other ladies. Please contact Maya Berry or Iris Salcewicz with any questions.

Do you like to read and talk about books? Do you like to read current bestsellers or classic books - mysteries, thrillers or non-fiction?

The Book Lovers Group meets monthly on the second Sunday at 4:00 PM. We are meeting by Zoom and normally we meet about 1 1/2 hours. We have a lively discussion about the book since sometimes we all like the book and other times, we can’t agree if we like the book.

The Pender Book Lovers Group will be reading Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell for the July meeting. The group will be meeting by Zoom on Sunday, July 10 at 4 PM. The book is available for purchase on Amazon or at the local public library.

Contact Iris for more information or the webmaster for the Zoom link.

At Western Fairfax Christian Ministries, we have seen significant growth this past year and we continue to meet the growing needs due to your generosity and many others like you! Your support of our Annual Spring Appeal enables us to continue to expand and assist our neighbors who require help with basic necessities.

Your gift will be matched dollar for dollar up to $35,000 by a family who believes that no individual or family should be concerned with where their next meal will come from. They believe everyone should have access to fresh foods such as dairy, meat and produce that contribute to a well-balanced meal.

Please consider an online donation, or mailing a check, before June 30th for our 2022 Spring Appeal so that we can continue to expand our services.
