What is heck is happening in America today?

The past 3 weeks has seen my disbelief of reality grow beyond measure. There are so many topics I could address. I mulled over writing about the continuing pro-Palestinian protests, the growing anti-Semitism, the disastrous debate, the attempted assassination of Trump, the Democrats non-democratic coup, Biden’s dropping out of the race, to Kamala’s rise to the Democrats presumptive nominee.

I was disgusted watching the pro-Palestinian protesters burn our American flag, attack our men and women in blue, and deface our statues outside the Capitol and Union Station. However, it was seeing the burning of our American flag, once again by the detestable pro-Palestinian protesters, that broke my heart. I am a full supporter of our right to free speech, but it has gone beyond "free speech" in my opinion.

In 1989, the Supreme Court case Texas vs Johnson regarding burning of the American flag, “the majority argued, were symbolic speech, political in nature, and could be expressed even at the expense of our national symbol and to the affront of those who disagreed with him.” That controversial ruling has been challenged over the years and upheld each time.

The 1^st Amendment is not absolute. Hate speech, destruction of property, burning draft cards (back in the day of draft cards), even yelling “bomb” on a plane, were/are illegal acts. Just try burning a Palestinian or gay pride flag and see how that goes!

I believe Supreme Court’s ruling on the right to burn our American flag has been a slap in the face to every patriot American. Our flag stands for our hard-won freedoms, our national pride, and American identity. I do not understand why the burning of our national symbol is not considered hate speech, destruction of property, inciteful, or an obscene gesture in a public space. It is all these things to us who love this country.

I am of the conviction that if one hates our country so much that they are compelled to burn the American symbol, they need to leave America. The first Amendment's right to free speech should NOT be extended to destroying our national symbol of American freedom, pride, and national identity.

Friendship Pizza Luncheon Recap

Our pizza luncheon on July 16th at Anthony's Pizza in Stephens City was a hit. We had a total of 48 show up. We lucked out with a great server, Mel, who took care of our group with ease. We had several special guests (besides our COLF members). Delegate Delores Oates, Emily Windle, Winchester City Council, Ward 2, Legislative Assistant to Delores Oates, and President of the Young Republicans, and Sarah Kahle, Frederick County Circuit Court Clerk.

Election 2024!

We need your help to win!

Do you take a walk (or drive) around your neighborhood? If so, we could use your legs/help on Monday, September 23rd and/or Tuesday, September 24th (weather dependent) to distribute sample ballots and early voting information in the form of a Door Hanger.

Each team (or individual) will be given a list of Conservative (Republican or Neutral-based on the most current databases) households on which to place the hangers. You can help by either placing the hangers on the door or by driving someone through the neighborhood.

This is a great way to explore your neighborhood, and who knows, you might even meet some of your neighbors!

If you believe in open borders (per the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP): 7.8 million illegal border crossings under the current administration and 1.5 million “gotaways” detected and never apprehended.) and its enormous impacts of drugs, human trafficking, and crime; then vote Democrat.

In the last few weeks, I have talked to a handful of people that had not heard of the acronym “DEI.” I erroneously assumed that conservatives, especially the white, Christian, and heterosexual ones, were very aware of the societal push of “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion”, or DEI. It made me realize that not everyone was as aware of the leftist agenda that has become the battle cry of liberals in this country. So, what is DEI?

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

WE NEED YOU

Each member of COLF probably joined because he felt that something needs to be done to bring our country back to being the strong world leader we once were. Our integrity, reputation, and trustworthiness have suffered. Each of us has felt the need to do something to improve our country.

Therefore, the List of Volunteer Opportunities below was some suggestions. Please feel free to add more ideas. This is only a start. I am confident that you will find more than one for which you are an exact fit.

Use your caring smile and your confident handshake (or a hug) to influence. You may be the perfect person to influence others (and their votes) in your social sphere. Many of us are uncomfortable about stepping into a conversation opening where we could easily express an opinion held. Just say it kindly and respectfully. From that point you’ve given someone a new thought, or you’ve started a quiet conversation of questions or comments. You might say more, or say nothing else. Read the situation and decide. We are not here to indoctrinate, but to inform others of the Truth. As Americans we each have this responsibility, and the duty to vote.

Perhaps in your social sphere (a family member, neighbor, friend), you know someone very well who may not care to choose a candidate or take time to go to the polls. Share your reasons for voting, your passion for this country, or your concerns for the future of your friend’s or neighbor’s grandchildren, or his health, wealth account, or his freedom.

These folks know you and respect you. You are known by those around you for being sensible, caring, sincere, and quietly correct. You are whom your family, neighbors, and friends trust, so use your influence. You have little to loose by making a gentle comment. Keep it light and respectful. End the subject when it seems to be a good idea.

Use your cell phone to call or text your legislators to express your views about a topic. Phone calls are easy, quick, and get highly effective responses because legislators (local, state, and federal) are always dependent on votes. Your cell phone call could have a huge impact on a senator or representative, even as much as 10,000 times greater than your one vote. Usually cell phone calls are free as well.

Use your cell phone to call old friends, or far away family, or next door friends to catch up, and ask about whether they need a ride to register or vote. Some older folks feel far removed from world events and politics. It can be confusing and troublesome. Kind words to explain the issues or the candidates’ positions may be much appreciated. Remind folks to get out and vote. Check to see who needs a ride. You might also arrange a ride through COLF.

More Volunteer Opportunities—Use your car, your influence, your outgoing personality, your artistic talent, your dedication to our country’s ideals, your intellect to explain truths that resonate with those who feel confused. Bake and share cookies decorated with the word “Vote” or "Trump-Vance" on them!
