Sept. 15, 2021

Neighbors,

Last Saturday, Volunteer Fairfax hosted a countywide Volunteerfest as part of the 9/11 20th Anniversary remembrance. I had the opportunity to help out for a short time at the Cornerstones food distribution (photo). As we see time and time again in Hunter Mill District and Fairfax County, hundreds of residents came out to donate their skills and time to help neighbors in need and to make our community a better place to live. A big thank you to everyone who participated!

Volunteerism is the backbone of the county, especially in our Hunter Mill neighborhoods. There are many, many opportunities to volunteer, whether you have a passion for a particular issue, or just want to give back to your community when you have some free time on a Saturday. I encourage everyone who can to volunteer – I think you'll find as I have that you get much more back than what you give.

If you are interested, here are some opportunities for your consideration:

If you have any questions about volunteering in Hunter Mill District, please email my office at huntermill@fairfaxcounty.gov

Respectfully,
Walter

September Adoptable Pet of the Month: Coco
Gwenn is the go-to person on my staff for human services (and other issues) but today she spent some quality time with our animal friends at the county's Animal Shelter. She is shown here with this month's adoptable pet Coco, a very well mannered, 14-year-old terrier mix. Coco's family moved and couldn't take her, so she is looking for a new home.

Learn more about the Animal Shelter's adoption process, including requirements and adoption fee structure. They have dogs, cats and small animals available to adopt, and do same-day adoptions.

Public Safety Update
Safety Tips to Reduce Scams From Fairfax County Police Department
  • When you are contacted, ask yourself "does this request seem legitimate?"
  • Scammers often make their caller ID appear real to try and trick you.
  • If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from a law enforcement agency telling you there is a warrant out for your arrest and demands payment to resolve the warrant, do not comply. Federal and local law enforcement departments will not ask you for money or payment in the form of gift cards to avoid arrest.
  • When in doubt, do not provide any form of payment and find a way to contact the company directly.
  • If someone calls you offering tech support or claiming your computer has a virus, hang up.
  • If they are asking for payment with gift cards of any kind, it is likely a scam.
  • If you believe you or a loved one have been scammed, file a report with the Financial Crimes Online Reporting (FiCOR) system
