White Plains Celebrates Juneteenth!
White Plains celebrated Juneteenth in a number of creative ways.

The Youth Bureau’s Keepers of the Dream, along with the WESPAC Foundation, BackYard Sports Cares and the Westchester Youth Alliance, sponsored “Social Justice and the Arts,” at Turnure Park, with readings, speeches and music. (At right -- Photo by Andrew Courtney)
White Plains Juneteenth Heritage, Inc. hosted a virtual celebration, with prominent community speakers and excerpts from previous Juneteenth parades and celebrations. White Plains Recreation & Parks Commissioner Wayne Bass, Grand Marshal of the celebration (at left), delivered the keynote address.
Independence Day, the annual celebration of our nationhood. It commemorates the passage of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.

There are many ways to celebrate the holiday right here in White Plains.

  • Take an up-close look at "The Battle of White Plains", (shown here) painted by Edmund F. Ward 95 years ago, on display in White Plains Library.
  •
  • Explore the White Plains Heritage Trail which takes you past 24 historic sites in an 11-mile loop through White Plains, West Harrison and North Castle.

  • The City Clerk's Office and the Recreation and Parks Department have created historic walking loops which highlight White Plains' rich history. These loops make for fun and interesting family walks and are a great way to get your exercise and gain some local historical knowledge at the same time!

White Plains Has Parks for All Seasons
White Plains has 20 parks, totaling more than 100 acres throughout the city. Perhaps one of the most appropriate to explore on July 4th is the Battle of White Plains Park, on high ground overlooking the Bronx River and the downtown area. Battle Hill Park is located at the corner of Whitney Street and Battle Avenue.

Interpretive historical signage is located throughout the park and which is also home to:
  • A children’s playground with fibar surface
  • Two seating areas, one trellised with an overlook, the other a plaza-type seating area with game tables
For even more nearby parks and outdoor recreation check the Westchester County Parks & Events website.

Con-Edison Conducting Natural Gas Detector and Service Line Inspections
Con Edison is currently conducting Natural Gas Detector and Natural Gas Service Line Inspection programs at customer premises.  This is a requirement of the New York State Public Service Commission.

The Natural Gas Service Line Inspection is designed to inspect the gas line and meter to check for corrosion and leaks.  These inspections generally take approximately 15 minutes to perform. If a leak is found on customer piping that cannot be repaired during the visit, the gas service will be disconnected until repairs are made by a licensed plumber.

For constituents looking for more information on the Natural Gas Detectors they can call the Con Edison customer service line at 1-800-75CONED (752-6633) or visit the following Natural Gas Detector Frequently Asked Questions

The City of White Plains Community Development Housing Rehabilitation Program may be able to assist eligible households with the costs of any repairs that arise out of the inspections. If you are interested, please contact our office before making any repairs. You can reach us at 914-422-1300 or by email: planning@whiteplainsny.gov.

Favorite White Plains Tree
Thank you to Tracy Bowen for submitting this photo of her favorite evergreen tree in Battle Hill Park on the corner of Whitney and Battle, and for passing along these comments:

"It is not fancy or flowery like other trees. But just stands tall and majestic and on the corner of one of best parks in White Plains.

And every holiday it is decorated with holiday lights by the City of White Plains workers. It is beautiful and stunning and wonderful to see when you round the top of Battle Ave on your way home. Just love it."
