A Note from the President

Raj Woolever second headshot.jpg

On behalf of the FMEC staff and Board of Trustees, I would like to extend warm holiday greetings! This is always a busy season and the pandemic continues to have significant impact in many ways. This is a particularly challenging time, and the FMEC is working to support family physicians and all members of the healthcare team throughout the Northeast. Thanks to all those providing care for those in need in our busy clinics and overcrowded hospitals; and thank you for remaining committed to the continuous healing relationships that distinguish Family Medicine.

We hope you also find time to connect with family and friends and take good care of yourselves during this holiday time. Thanks for your commitment to the FMEC. We look forward to seeing you at our next Annual Meeting, September 16-18, 2022 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, VA.

Happy Holidays!

Donald (Raj) Woolever, MD, FAAFP

As we celebrate the year-end holidays during a challenging time, the FMEC hopes you find inspiration in this poem from Alberto Rios, When Giving is All We Have.

News from FMEC

New report on wellness initiatives and well-being champions

The FMEC was proud to collaborate with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and others to collect data for a new report, which provides background on the status of wellness initiatives in health care. Health care provider well-being is important to patient outcomes, health care costs and more, and wellness initiatives have only become more urgent due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The AAMC’s November 2021 report, “The Rise of Wellness Initiatives in Health Care: Using National Survey Data to Support Effective Well-Being Champions and Wellness Programs,” provides an overview of wellness initiatives and related challenges, as well as recommendations for future action. While the growth of such programs is encouraging, other findings include that the breadth of wellness programs varies widely, many well-being champions have no formal training, and many wellness programs have no formal results or outcomes demonstrating efficacy. Read more in FMEC’s news release.

Quick COVID-19 survey shows response from primary care

Green Center 4Ways.png

Since March 2020, the Larry A. Green Center, along with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, The Morris-Singer Foundation, and The Samueli Foundation, has conducted a national survey to better understand the response and capacity of US primary care practices to COVID-19, as well as the potential impact of the pandemic on primary care. The FMEC thanks its members for participating. Results of the ongoing survey are available on the Quick Covid-19 Survey page and include infographics documenting survey findings. For instance, the survey has identified four ways primary care has been helping patients and the communities during the pandemic: increasing support for mental health and substance abuse, helping with food and housing insecurity, reducing fees, and adopting telehealth.
