PSD Hosts Family Fun Days at the Philadelphia Zoo and Adventure Aquarium

On Saturday, August 23, PSD hosted a unique visit to the Philadelphia Zoo for 30 families attended by over 120 students and family members. The event provided a unique opportunity for PSD students and their families to make memories, gain language skills, and build community. Unique, ASL-accessible maps using QR code links to ASL videos created by PSD were given to every family upon arrival at the Zoo.(All of the ASL models/signers in the videos are PSD students and staff.) Click here to view our Media Advisory about the event: Read more.....

On Monday, August 30, PSD hosted a trip to the Adventure Aquarium, Camden, providing students and up to three family members a full day pass. Students and families were also given customized maps consisting of QR codes for aquarium-related ASL signs, vocabulary, and phrases that students and families could learn and practice together. Families explored one-of-a-kind exhibits and over 15,000 aquatic animals, including the largest collection of sharks in the Northeast.

Thank you to all of our families and friends who made these trips possible!

Resource Guide for Supporting Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing Inivuduals

The purpose of this guide is to offer resources in one central location for those who support or care for someone who is Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or DeafBlind and receives supports from the Office of Developmental Programs (ODP). Development of this guide included input from individuals within the Deaf, DeafBlind, hard of hearing, and hearing communities. This guide provides some of the most frequently accessed resources to assist in addressing the unique needs of these populations.

This Guide is attached and will also be available in the near future on MyODP.org under Training > Special Populations > Deaf Services

Comcast is thrilled that this new school year is starting out with more opportunities than ever for Philadelphians and others in our region and across the country to get connected to the Internet.

We are expanding eligibility for the Internet Essentials program, which over the last decade has allowed more than 840,000 local residents to connect to the internet for the heavily discounted price of just $9.95/month. Now, all Federal Pell Grant recipients across our service area will qualify for Internet Essentials, allowing nearly one million additional students nationally to benefit from Comcast’s signature broadband adoption and digital equity initiative. Students receiving a Federal Pell Grant can now use their Financial Aid Award Letter as proof of eligibility for Internet Essentials.
PA ABLE helps Pennsylvanians with disabilities live more independently.

In honor of #ABLEtoSave month, State Treasurer Stacy Garrity and Pennsylvania Senator Lisa Baker recently issued an op-ed highlighting PA ABLE accounts and the ABLE Age-Adjustment Act. This important federal legislation would raise the age of eligibility for ABLE accounts from 26 to 46, allowing millions of Americans – including an estimated 1 million veterans – to benefit from saving in an ABLE account.

Also, the Social Security Administration (SSA) recently announced it will no longer count financial assistance from COVID-19 stimulus payments against Supplemental Security Income (SSI) eligibility or payments, regardless of whether or not those dollars are in an ABLE account. . Are you Eligible?
