GRANT SPOTLIGHT

My Maryland Farmers

Maryland Soybean Board

My Maryland Farmers is a consumer-focused project that reaches Marylanders through a blog, website, and social media to introduce them to Maryland agriculture. Regularly sharing stories from farmers from across the state, My Maryland Farmers helps to bridge the communications gap between consumers and local farms. The project has produced tremendous results on social media and continues to grow as a respected and trusted source of information about food and farming.

While the project covers all things related to agriculture, the funding provided by this grant included a campaign of four blog stories (one per quarter) along with supporting social media content specific to grain farming in 2021. These blog posts were:

  • "New Ways to Reuse Litter to Benefit Maryland's Environment" featuring Jonathan Quinn, James Fisher, and Jenny Rhodes, published in January of 2021
  • "Farmers Drive Food to the Table Safely" featuring Justin Brendel, published in March of 2021.
  • "Farms Use Technology to Grow Crops Right for Consumers and the Environment" featuring William Jeanes and Matthew Farace, published in May of 2021.
  • "Maryland Farmers Fight Air Pollution with Renewable Fuels: featuring Chip Bowling and Travis Hutchison, published in July of 2021.
  • "Why Aren't All Farms Organic" featuring Evan Miles, published in October of 2021.

The Maryland Grain Producers are happy to partner with the Maryland Soybean Board and fund this project with $10,000 for 2022!

Addressing Consumer Questions about Food and Farming

Mid Atlantic CommonGround

CommonGround is a homegrown program of the corn and soybean checkoff programs to target food influencers and consumers with factual food and farming information. Volunteer farmers engage consumers at markets, nutrition events, and "foodie" activities, telling their farm story with credible, third-party science and research to increase consumer trust and build positive attitudes about our farmers and their operations.

The Maryland Grain Producers are excited to see the work done through this program, and have funded $12,000 for 2022!

Maryland Grain Producers Check-Off Program
The Maryland Grain Producers Utilization Board is funded through the Maryland Grain Check-Off Program; when grain that is produced in Maryland is sold by a farmer, the Utilization Board receives one-half of a percent of its net value. The Check-Off program is voted on by referendum every five years and has always received a greater than 90% affirmation vote. Each year organizations and universities are encouraged to submit grant proposals in November for consideration by MGPUB. The Utilization Board gathers to hear presentations on each proposal and reports from the previously funded projects. Projects must improve the viability and profitability of grain production through research, education, or market development.

For 2022, the Grain Producers will award $978,650 for 37 projects across the state. Congratulations to each recipient.
