May 20, 10:30 AM

Stony Run Pedestrian Bridge

Linkwood and Stoney Ford Road

Join Maggie McIntosh, her family, and neighbors in naming the bridge in memory of Maggie's sister, Amy Michel. Many of you may remember Amy walking dogs throughout the neighborhood. The Baltimore City Council formally approved the bridge name several years ago but no celebration was held due to COVID.

Delegate McIntosh and others secured funding for the two bridges that cross Stony Run and also the Stony Run walking path that connects all the neighborhoods from Northern Parkway to 29th Street.

Maryland Drivers are THE WORST!

But are they really?

We've all been wondering what triggered all the crazy, aggressive drivers we've seen on our roads since the start of the COVID lockdown. Everyone has anecdotes about people who brazenly run red lights, switch lanes two at a time and then back again on the Beltway, drive on the shoulder, and do whatever it takes to save 10 seconds....all lost when they have to slam on their brakes again at the next traffic jam or red light.

Researchers at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have been studying aggressive driving since NHTSA was established. In 2004, NHTSA published results of a study on aggressive driving that stated, "People have reported the occasional on-the-road behavior that we now describe as aggressive driving since the advent of motorized transport, and quite possibly, since the beginning of vehicular travel." The report went on to state "...shocking reports of road rage incidents [in the 1990s] appeared to many observers to coincide with a noticeable increase in aggressive driving, in general, and a sharp decline in civility and respect for other motorists and traffic laws."

Sound familiar?

It's hard to quantify exactly what constitutes "aggressive driving" and measure precisely how many "aggressive" acts people unleash on their fellow drivers each day. Nobody can say for certain whether things got worse during COVID or whether there was any relationship. However, sociologists, psychiatrists, law enforcement personnel, and engineers have suggested a few common causes of aggressive driving that may have been exacerbated by COVID: drivers' impatience due to congestion, people running late, the anonymity afforded by being insulated from the surrounding environment even while traveling through it in a multi-ton vehicle, disregard for the law or decreasing sense that punishment will be certain, disregard for personal risk and risks to others, or even habit.

Before you put your car up for sale and move to a mountaintop, take heart in the fact that Maryland remains one of the safer places to travel in the U.S. Measured by fatalities per 100 million miles driven, Maryland was the 13th safest state in the country in 2022. (Massachusetts was number 1.)

Baltimore City, with slower speeds on narrower city streets, is a safer place to drive, walk, or bike than the Maryland average. And Tuscany-Canterbury is one of the safest neighborhoods in Baltimore, with our most pressing safety hot spots on 39th Street and University Parkway addressed in recent years via improved traffic signals, our roundabout, and redesigned streets that have reduced travel speeds and provided safer spaces to walk and bike. And there's more to come.

For more information about aggressive driving, highway safety statistics, and what you can do to help, go to the Maryland Department of Transportation's Highway Safety Office website, Zero Deaths Maryland.

The Waverly Book Festival is coming!

April 28-30th!

The Waverly Book Festival is coming up, and we are so excited! The Festival will feature local writers and local shops, as well as showcase our book stores in our district! It will take place on the parking lot where the 32nd Street Farmer's Market is, as well as in some of our local book stores!

Sherwood Gardens

I am proud to represent Sherwood Gardens! My daughter and I visited over the weekend and I wanted to report that some tulips are starting to peek through! Some beds still do not have any tulips yet, while others will be bursting soon. I'll keep reporting through the next couple of weeks as the blooms begin to be spectacular.

Street Light Replaced, March 2023

Thank you for the combined effort of Comptroller Bill Henry, Councilwoman Odette Ramos, Mary Pat Clarke and the Baltimore City Transportation Department to get the replacement parts and install a new historic street light to replace the one that was knocked down by a car accident in December 2021.

HOPKINS EXPERTS TAKE ON TOP FOOD MYTHS

Navigating today's conflicting advice about nutrition can be confusing. "We're used to viewing social media on our phones, and we just quickly scroll," says Christine McKinney, a registered dietitian with Johns Hopkins. "We might only be seeing the headline or maybe the first two sentences." Johns Hopkins Magazine turned to a panel of experts for the truth—the science-backed, evidence-based, fact-checked truth—behind some common food myths.

Restaurants

In and Around Tuscany-Canterbury

Kathryn Gallagher, TCNA Restaurant Liaison

Spring has sprung, and it is never more beautiful than in our own Tuscany Canterbury. Celebrate the Spring at one of our neighborhood restaurants.

Bradley’s Bar and Grill Formerly Alizee in the Colonnade

Reservations required for Mother's Day Brunch, 410 235 5400

Seatings at 11, 12:30, 1:30, 2:30

Brunch at One World Café never disappoints, with Belgian Waffles, Salmon Omelets and Buttermilk Pancakes on the menu. The variety doesn’t stop at food.  On a recent visit to One World I asked for tea, and was presented with twenty varieties.

Though I chose Peppermint (which was delicious), Berry Patch, Euco Mint, and Lemon Zinger were tempting options. (There is also plenty of Early Grey and English Breakfast for the more traditional tea drinkers.)

New Cafe Coming

Flowers are not the only thing blooming in our neighborhood, a new business may be on the way! It appears the former Sam’s Café may soon be home to a new café. Serving croissants, coffee, and similar items, it will open early for those who like their morning caffeine. New pavers were recently installed in the outdoor seating area, making it a perfect spot for an iced coffee.

Now offering Weekend Brunch Buffet. Voted Best Indian Restaurant in Baltimore by Baltimore Magazine, Ambassador Dining Room serves the traditional & authentic Indian dishes.

Enjoy the beautiful outdoor patio, overlooking a verdant urban oasis.

For your perfect event, whether you are planning a business luncheon, all-day meeting, rehearsal dinner, fundraiser, surprise party, anniversary, or holiday party, Cypriana can meet your needs.
