Dear friends,

I am back from the road, from camping and from time away. I had a wonderful time, saw beautiful places, met some great people, all while enjoying the time with my son, Bryn, immensely.

Pictured above is the cabin we stayed in along Emigrant Gulch in the village of Old Chico, near the north border of Yellowstone Park. One critter we met here was a marmot, a large squirrel like mammal who seemed to own the small pond nearby. The marmot has an unusual chirp, almost like a bird, that he used when telling us to keep our distance. Marmot, bison, hawks and more, all just awesome!

It is so good to be back, to begin to see you all in church, at worship and in meetings as together we continue as a community of faith. We work to be the presence of Christ here by remembering that we have been created by God to follow Christ and the spirit: to love, honor and serve one another and God.

A terrible loss took place while I was away; church secretary Lesa Ward’s husband Dave passed away unexpectedly the last week of July. Dave and Lesa first met in high school while growing up in Napa. They married soon afterwards and recently celebrated their 44th anniversary. It is devastating to lose a friend but to lose a life partner, a companion from one’s early years, leaves a hole that will heal but never filled. I ask that we as a community hold Lesa and her adult children, Ryan and Jamie, as well as the rest of their family, in prayers for healing and comfort. Lesa has been and continues to be an integral part of our church and its vitality. We ask that God surround her with grace and peace and that Christ be with her each step of the way. Many thanks to those who filled in for me in July. Big grateful shout outs to Michael Herzog, Caroline Pietrangelo Owens, and Karl Parker for their good and faithful time in the pulpit at worship on the 17^th, 24^th, and 31^st.

Wednesday August 17^th we will hold out next Film night at 6 p.m. This month the classic detective comedy ‘After the Thin Man’ starring Myrna Loy, William Powell and James Stewart will be shown at church. It is an entertaining look at San Francisco 80 years ago when upper class sleuths solved crimes while trading wise cracks with pistol shots. Bring a dish to share along with your own dinner as we enjoy fellowship with a movie. All are welcome!

To close today, from Genesis 28, a part of Jacob’s dream,

Suddenly the Lord was standing and saying, “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac.¹⁵I am with you now, I will protect you everywhere you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done everything that I have promised you.” ¹⁶When Jacob woke from his sleep, he thought to himself, The Lord is definitely in this place, but I didn’t know it.
