DeSantis Still Refusing to Rule Out More Extreme Restrictions to Reproductive Freedom

Miami, FL -- It’s now been more than 10 days since the draft Supreme Court opinion has come to light, but Ron DeSantis is still refusing to rule out even more extreme plans to eliminate reproductive freedom in Florida if Roe v. Wade is overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.

He's avoiding questions now, but Ron DeSantis has a long history of trying to eliminate reproductive rights. DeSantis signed a 15-week abortion ban into law with no exceptions for rape, incest, or instances of human trafficking earlier this year. Last year, he showed interest in a Texas-style abortion ban and even signed onto an amicus brief encouraging the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade.

On Monday, Florida Democratic leaders called out DeSantis and Florida Republicans for their dangerous and unpopular agenda to restrict reproductive freedom. But as his fellow Republicans endorse increasingly extreme restrictions on reproductive freedom, Ron DeSantis seems content to lead from behind and is refusing to oppose plans that criminalize medical providers, throw women in jail and ban contraception.

Florida Democratic Party spokesperson Kobie Christian released the following statement:
“Republicans are calling for criminalizing reproductive freedom with no exceptions and Ron DeSantis hasn’t ruled anything out. Floridians can’t trust Ron DeSantis to ensure their reproductive rights and the freedom to raise a family on their own terms. He must stop hiding and tell Florida where he stands.”
