FROM THE VIRTUAL ENGAGEMENT LIBRARIAN
Hello! My name is Lizzie Hjelle, and I am the new Virtual Engagement Librarian at the Shorewood Public Library. I graduated with an MLIS degree and an MA in Women’s and Gender Studies this past May from UW-Milwaukee, and local history and genealogy enthusiasts may recognize me from my time as an intern at the UWM Archives.

As I jump into my new role at the library, I look forward to working with our social media channels and website to increase our online engagement while continuing to build community connections. This past year has shown that social media and online resources play a vital role in keeping the community informed about changes in library services, updates to library procedures, and new or continuing library events. Social media can also help us feel connected to our community through virtual events and interactive content when we aren’t able to be together in person. Moving forward, I hope to continue using the library’s social media and online resources to keep the community informed, engaged, and connected through anything the future throws our way. You can follow the Shorewood Public Library on Facebook, Twitter, and on our new Instagram account.

Feel free to stop and say hello next time you see me in the library; I look forward to getting to know you!

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE WITH LEO
Leo, our library mascot, is back, and he's ready for more summer fun! Each week, we'll post two similar pictures of Leo's adventures around Shorewood. Can you spot the three differences? Guess correctly and your name will be entered in a drawing for a gift card to a Shorewood business. Learn more HERE.
THE STORY KEEPER: WEAVING THE THREADS OF TIME AND MEMORY
Holocaust survivor Fred Feldman will discuss his memoir, The Story Keeper: Weaving the Threads of Time and Memory, in a conversation with his sister Charlotte Feldman-Jacobs on Wednesday, July 28th at 7:00 PM. The program will be held virtually via Zoom, and you can register HERE.

Born near Baku, Azerbaijan, Fred will share the story of his parents and their escape from the looming Nazi threat. After World War II, the Feldmans escaped the Soviet Union to refugee collection centers in Poland, and were transferred to several displaced persons camps in Austria before immigrating to the United States.

NEW AT THE LIBRARY: MAGNIFIER
We are pleased to offer a new tabletop magnifier, generously donated by Friends of the Shorewood Public Library trustee Heidi Frenzel.

Whether you need text enlarged to aid with reading, or need to see a detailed hand-held task - such as stitching - up close, the tabletop magnifier is available for use anytime the library is open. The magnifier features several options to enhance contrast and readability, plus a text-to-talk option which reads text aloud to you. We know it will be useful to many!

PROGRAM PREVIEW
FOR CHILDREN & FAMILIES
Summer heats up this month with many activities for children and families!

Join us on Tuesday, July 6th at 1:30 PM at a Sidewalk Chalk Expo for all ages to help us beautify the walkways around the Village Courtyard. You can bring your own chalk or use the chalk provided.

Stretch with a Story for infants through age eight will be hosted outdoors on the library lawn on Wednesday, July 7th at 10:30 AM. No registration is required - simply bring your own mat or blanket.

Terrific Tuesdays continue Tuesday, July 13th at 1:30 PM with the Milwaukee Flyers Tumbling Team. Then, on Tuesday, July 20th, the Milwaukee Dog Training Club will perform a demonstration of dog obedience and agility skills on the library lawn.

Summer activities for kids and families also include weekly Art Cart kits, and Story Times, biweekly Tinker Lab kits, and a monthly Family Fun Night activity kit.
FOR TEENS
This summer, teens can drop by the library for some take-home summer boredom-busters.

Teen Take & Make Thursdays continue every Thursday this July. Weekly activities include duct tape crafts, art trading cards, and LED Art. Kits can be picked up in-person or curbside.
FOR ADULTS
This month's PM Book Club pick is a fictional story of three unique women in post-Apartheid South Africa. Read If You Want to Make God Laugh by Bianca Marais and join the conversation on Wednesday, July 7th at 7:00 PM. Bring a chair or blanket because we will be meeting outside on the library lawn (or inside the library if it rains).

In July's nonfiction AM Book Club pick, Tightrope: Americans Reaching for Hope by Nickolas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, readers are given multiple accounts of working-class families needlessly damaged as a result of decades of policy mistakes. Join the conversation on Thursday, July 15th at 11:00 AM via Zoom.
WHAT WE'RE READING

Translated from Japanese to English for the first time, Super Mario Manga Mania collects a number of fun, short adventures derived from several Mario-themed video games. While this comic book-like volume may appear to appeal towards children, there's humor and story lines that resonate with adults, too. I grew up playing Nintendo, and this was my first time reading manga (read back to front and right to left) - what a treat to see some of my favorite characters in a new light!

When 23 year-old August moves to New York City, she plans to keep her head down and finally escape her mother’s cold-case obsession. Normally skeptical and reserved, August accidentally stumbles into a friendship with her three quirky roommates, working nights at the neighborhood pancake diner, and an impossibly electric connection with a girl on the subway who looks like she jumped right out of the 1970s- because she did. One Last Stop is a heartwarming and funny romance about finding community, queer identity, and what it means to finally feel at home.

Legendary surfer Joe Sharkey has conquered all the biggest waves of the world and his home on Hawaii's North Shore. But, as he grapples with the reality of aging, he must face the facts that his life's easy rhythms have been both hard-won and can be too-easily lost. A sudden life-altering event seems to unravel him and only his girlfriend, Olive, works to keep the pieces together. This is a deeply interesting novel which brings Hawaii and surf culture to life and is best read by the body of water of your choice.

INFORMATION YOU CAN TRUST
With so many sources for information, it can be hard to sort out fact from fiction and to determine who to trust.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services webpage has up-to-date information about the COVID-19 pandemic including data about the vaccination rollout, who is eligible, and where to get a vaccine.
